YEAR 10 & VCE PREPARATION Ms Sarah Tymensen Deputy Principal - Learning and Teaching Mrs Jane Watkins Senior Studies Leader
IMPORTANT DATES TERM 1 MARCH 19 Year 10 Forum: VCE Briefing TERM 2 APRIL 19 & 20 Morrisby Careers Testing APRIL 23 - MAY 1 Careers Conversations JUNE 12 - 21 Year 10 Examinations TERM 3 JULY 16 - 20 Year 10 Work Experience JULY 23 Subject Supermarket VCE 2019 Parent Briefing, 7:45pm AUGUST 14 Parent Student Teacher Interviews 2:45 - 8:30pm FRIDAY SUBJECT SELECTION CLOSES AUGUST 17
THE CONVERSATIONS START NOW It is important that students spend the first half of this year developing their understanding of their options for 2019 and 2020. Subject decisions need to be made early in Term 3. Think about: • Pathways, • Finding out what different subjects would involve, especially links between Year 10 and VCE/VCAL/VET content, • Who to talk to - Subject Teachers and Mentors, • Suitability to apply for a Unit 3/4 study at Year 11, and • Linking post-secondary courses of interest and prerequisite studies to a Year 11 and 12 two-year program.
VCE PATHWAY VCE: Victorian Certificate of Education • Completed over 2 years: ➔ Units 1/2 – equivalent of Yr 11, and ➔ Units 3/4 – equivalent of Yr 12. It is possible to complete a Unit 3/4 study in Yr 11 It is important to consider this in terms of a program that includes units of study appropriate to student interest and aspiration regarding tertiary study, training and/or employment.
VET & VCE PATHWAY VET: Vocational Education and Training • Provides an opportunity for students, in combination with their VCE studies, to pursue a course that will enable them to attain a TAFE Certificate. Course offered at Star of the Sea: Certificate II & III in Business There is also the opportunity for students to access VET Courses through a variety of TAFE providers.
VCAL PATHWAY VCAL: Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning • Accredited senior secondary certificate of education that sits parallel with the VCE. Core principles of VCAL involve development of pathways, and course requirements include a combination of VCAL, VET and VCE units There is a focus on personal development, work-related skills, interest and pathways through applied (or ‘hands on project-based’) learning.
UNDERTAKING A UNIT 3/4 SUBJECT IN YEAR 11 There is a stringent application process: • Applications will need to be endorsed by: ➔ Mentor teacher, ➔ Relevant subject teachers, and ➔ The Faculty Leader. Suitability for this will be based on: ❏ Academic Performance ❏ Organisational Skills ❏ Attendance N.B. Failure to submit tasks for assessment (NS) will limit student options
UNDERTAKING A UNIT 3/4 SUBJECT IN YEAR 11 While a Unit 3/4 study may be taken in Year 11 to enhance study scores and the ATAR, all students are expected to undertake 5 VCE subjects in Year 12: Consider subject options carefully. Students should only consider completing a Unit 3/4 study early if they can ensure meeting the expectations of the study. Some options which could be considered would be: Australian History, History: Revolutions, Biology, Psychology, Legal Studies, Food Studies, Geography, Health & Human Development, Texts and Traditions or Physical Education
HOW TO START PREPARING FOR VCE Year 10 is a pre-VCE Year • Monitor attendance - gaps can quickly develop in knowledge from frequent absence. • Students need to follow up with teachers when absent (illness or excursion) - students need to develop skills in being proactive in their learning and taking responsibility for ensuring they do not fall behind. Holidays during the school term impact student progress Further to this, at VCE level, there are VCAA mandated attendance expectations. N.B. Semester 1 Results are used as a benchmark for selection into Unit 3/4 studies at Year 11 (2019)
STUDY HABITS • Now is the time to establish good routine • Think about what style of study suits you best • Working smarter not harder • 2 hours of study per day https://selfcontrolapp.com/
