TRANSITION YEAR Transition Year is a one year school based programme between Junior and Senior Cycle . It is designed to act as a bridge between the two by facilitating the smooth transition from the more dependant learning of the Junior Cycle to the more independent self-directed learning required for the Senior Cycle
TRANSITION YEAR The story so far……. INTRODUCED IN 1973, 163 SCHOOLS BY 1993 MAINSTREAMED IN 1994 APROX. 70-75% OF ALL POST PRIMARY SCHOOLS CURRENTLY 550 SCHOOLS EACH SCHOOL DESIGNS ITS OWN TRANSITION YEAR PROGRAMME, WITHIN SET GUIDELINES, TO SUIT THE NEEDS AND INTERESTS OF ITS STUDENTS. http://www.education.ie/en/Schools- Colleges/Information/Curriculum-and-Syllabus/Transition- Year-/Transition-Year.html#sthash.ZlAHsP5M.dpuf
NCCA LONGITUDINAL STUDY RESULTS OF STUDENTS WHO SAT LC IN ‘96 COMPARED WITH THOSE OF ‘97 MEAN CAO POINTS VERY SIMILAR FOR WHOLE COHORT TY STUDENTS DO BETTER BY AN AVERAGE OF 26 POINTS REPEAT STUDENTS ONLY GAIN BY AN AVERAGE OF 5 POINTS TY CANDIDATES MORE LIKELY TO BE ‘EDUCATIONALLY ADVENTUROUS’
TY in KCS TY IS OPTIONAL IN KCS CURRENTLY 160 STUDENTS - 6 CLASS GROUPS ENTRY INTO TY IS BY APPLICATION STUDENT’S PREVIOUS BEHAVIOURAL RECORD IS CONSIDERED ADHERENCE TO SCHOOL RULES IS CRUCIAL – ATTENDANCE, PUNCTUALITY, RESPECT
TRANSITION YEAR Why opt for Transition Year ? To promote maturity Maturity in studies – more self-directed learners Maturity in relation to work and careers Personal maturity - develop communication skills, self- confidence and a sense of responsibility Social maturity - greater ‘people’ skills and more awareness of the world outside school Maturity to help student make a more informed choice of subject for their Leaving Certificate studies
