MOST IMPORTANT RESTORATION PROJECT – Last Friday I sent my weekly Pastor's letter and provided
details about this restoration project. However, as some people do not receive my email, I thought it would be
good to also publish it in this week's bulletin: It concerns the next and most important restoration project to date
in our church: the Restoration of the tabernacle containing the Blessed Sacrament back to the central axis of
the church behind the main altar.

First a little history: In his wonderful book, The History of St. Andrew's Parish, Msgr. James Hourihan, who was
pastor from 1955 to 1982, explains why the tabernacle was moved to its present location. In the early 1970's
when the liturgical changes of the Second Vatican Council were first implemented, it was deemed necessary
to move the tabernacle to its present location because previously, the tabernacle and its surrounding structure
were directly on the table of the main altar. At the time the church was built in 1927 it was the liturgical practice
that the priest would face the altar during the Eucharistic Prayer rather than face toward the people. After
Vatican II, the documents were interpreted by some that it was required that the priest face the people during
the Eucharistic Prayer (although this was actually never a requirement and still is not). Nevertheless, Monsignor
Hourihan explains in his book that, at the time in the early 70's, it was thought that the most expedient and
practical thing to do was to simply move the tabernacle to the altar of St. Joseph on the north side of the church
and move St. Joseph's statue to the All-Saints Chapel. And so, St. Joseph lost his altar and dedicated chapel, and
the Blessed Sacrament was moved to the north side of the church.

When I was here previously as Associate Pastor, the topic was brought up and Msgr. English explained that the
option to move the tabernacle to St. Joseph's altar may not have been the best, but it was the easiest and cheapest
at the time when financial resources were scarce. Over time, it became obvious that this was not an optimal
situation but money and will were lacking and so it remained until the present time. Now that 50 years have
passed, it is time for a true restoration.

Providentially, last year the American Bishops began to write a document on the importance and centrality of
the Most Holy Eucharist in the life of the Church. I sent you the link to that document back when it was issued.
One of the reasons for the document is the fact that faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament
has waned in the past several decades to the point that some Catholics don't even know that it is truly Jesus
who is present in the Most Holy Eucharist and not just bread or a symbol. This is a truly scandalous and tragic
situation.

In addition, the American Bishops have also requested an "Eucharistic Renewal" which will begin this year with
the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. Details are found at: lacatholics.org/eucharist

It was in this environment that I discussed the matter with our Regional Bishop, Bishop David O'Connell, and he
agreed that it would be an appropriate time to restore our tabernacle to its central location. It was also the Year
of St. Joseph so it was obvious that St. Joseph should be restored to his original altar as well complementing the
altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the south side of the church.

I then began the process of obtaining the necessary permissions from the Liturgy Office of the Archdiocese
as well as the Construction Department. This took some time. However, while that was taking place, we had
several parishioners who approached me precisely about this project and offered to donate funds to it. Without
any advertising or promotion, slowly all the money required was donated and we now have the necessary funds
for the project from private donations. Once all approvals were obtained and the plans finalized, we were ready
to go.
Sixth Sunday of Easter Sexto Domingo de Pascua
As a result, last week work finally began on it. It is rather extensive because it also requires structural supports
to be built up in the basement in order to support the new structure behind the altar. It is also complicated
because we wanted to ensure that the marble used would be from the same quarry as the original marble
used in 1927 and that the design by completely faithful to the original design. So, the new structure will be
directly behind the present main altar and, visually, it will look as beautiful as it did when the church was first
dedicated in 1927 while meeting all liturgical requirements.

Interestingly, some things were never changed: the altar has always been in the same location under the
baldacchino, the sanctuary lamps always remained in their place (although the Blessed Sacrament was no
longer there) and the design of the church still pointed toward the center where the Lord was no longer
present.

We are very blessed that we have an active Restoration Committee which consists of several parishioners
with experience in architecture, art, and related fields, who assist me in overseeing these restoration projects.
We also have the expertise of our liturgical consultant, Mr. Enzo Selvaggi, as well as our artist and restorer,
Mr. Evan Wilson, both of whom are heavily involved in this project. And we have the guidance from Mrs. Jill
Short of the Construction Office of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

The timing, as with most construction projects, is behind schedule. Originally, I had hoped that this project
would be done in Lent in time to be completed by Easter. That did not happen for a variety of reasons
including the delays in getting the marble from Italy. But now it is underway and should take a few weeks to
complete.

With the completion of this project, the architectural, artistic, and liturgical integrity of our church will be
fully restored. It is my hope that our devotion and faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Most Blessed
Sacrament will also be renewed as well as our love and devotion to St. Joseph, who will also be restored to his
rightful chapel. I ask you to please be patient as there will be the usual inconveniences of dust, etc. during the
construction.

CONFIRMATION MASS – On Saturday, May 28th, His Excellency, Bishop David O'Connell, Auxiliary
Bishop of Los Angeles, will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to our teenagers as well as several
adults. Most of them have been preparing for this day for the past two years. Next week they will be receiving
the Sacrament of Penance in preparation for Confirmation. Please pray for them as they are sealed with
the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Please pray for them week as they prepare for the
reception of this important Sacrament. You are invited to attend this special Parish celebration.

MEMORIAL DAY – Monday, May 30th, is Memorial Day. We will pray for the repose of the souls of those
who gave their life for our country. Please note that since this is a civic holiday, there will be only one Mass
that day at 9:30 a.m. The parish office and school will be closed.

English explicó que

Sixth Sunday of Easter Sexto Domingo de Pascua
