SIGN OF PEACE – Now that the mask mandate has been removed and the cases of coronavirus infection are very low, we are able to return to the practice of the Sign of Peace at Mass. But it is worthwhile to review a few basic facts. A few years ago, the Holy See issued new guidelines regarding the Sign of Peace at Mass. There are several points which were made: - The Sign of peace (when it is utilized) should be done with dignity, brevity and moderation. - When it is utilized, it should be done quietly and with restraint mindful that it takes place just prior to the reception of Holy Communion. - The Sign of Peace is completely optional. It may be omitted at the discretion of the Celebrant - It is purely symbolic. This means that it is not necessary to exchange it with a large number of people. When the priest invites us to “offer each other a sign of Christ’s peace” we simply turn to the person on our left and our right and say, “Peace be with you.” It is not necessary to widen it to a large number of people. - The priest is never to leave the altar to exchange the Sign of Peace nor is it a time of condolences at funerals or congratulations at weddings and other occasions. - So called “songs of peace” at the time of the Sign of Peace are inappropriate and not to be utilized. Instead, after a brief interchange of greeting, we immediately begin the chant of the Lamb of God. - You may wish to refrain from shaking hands at this time. I think at our parish we do a pretty good job of this, but it is good to keep in mind the above points lest the Sign of Peace become a distraction during the celebration of the Holy Mass. OUR PARISH PARKING LOT – It has now been two years since we first turned over the management of our large parking lot to Diamond Parking Services. I thought this might be a good time to review a few points about this so all our parishioners are well informed: - If you are coming to attend church services, visiting the Pastoral Center or Parish School you are never required to pay. - All others, however, are required to pay at the kiosk in the lot. So, there is no free parking for those who simply use our lot to visit Old Town, live or work nearby, etc. - Diamond parking personnel monitors the lot during all times and are responsible for its maintenance. If, for some reason, you mistakenly receive a parking ticket, please simply take it to the Pastoral Center and it will be deleted. Should you have any questions please feel free to reach out to Diamond Parking Services at 626-304-3001. HELP FOR TROUBLED MARRIAGES – This weekend we will have a brief announcement regarding the Retrovaille Program. This wonderful Catholic program assists couples who are experiencing troubles in their marriage. Over the years I have referred many couples to Retrovaille and they have greatly benefited from it. You can learn more about it at: www.HelpOurMarriage.org THANK YOU! – Last week's Baby Bottle Drive to assist the Pregnancy Help Center of San Gabriel Valley was such a great success that we ran out of baby bottles! Thank you! Please see their announcement elsewhere in this bulletin.

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC Where Moses is a type of new beginnings in Jesus Second Sunday of Lent - March 13, 2022 (e.g., the Passover and Exodus, which brought a kind of salvation and new life to the people of God, prefiguring the Redemption by Jesus on the Cross Introit and the institution of the Sacrifice of the Mass at the Tibi dixit cor meum, quæsivi vultum tuum, vultum tuum Last Supper), Elijah is a type of new endings: taken Domine requiram: ne avertas faciem tuam a me. up alive to heaven, Elijah’s return was prophesied Ps. Dominus illuminatio mea, et salus mea: quem timebo? by the prophet Malachi to be a harbinger of the end times. My heart has said to you, I have sought your face, I will seek your face, O Lord; turn not away your face from me. In fact, at the very end of the last book of the Old Psalm verse: The Lord is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear? Testament (Malachi 3:22-24), Moses and Elijah are explicitly linked in this way: “Remember the law of Moses my servant, whom I charged at Horeb with MUSIC IN THE LITURGY statutes and ordinances for all Israel. Now I am In all three yearly cycles of Sunday readings, the Gospel sending to you Elijah the prophet, before the day of of the second Sunday of Lent presents the episode of the LORD comes, the great and terrible day; He will the Transfiguration of the Lord. This event has long been associated with the second Sunday of Lent; in turn the heart of fathers to their sons, and the heart fact, its presentation here predates the feast of the of sons to their fathers, lest I come and strike the Transfiguration itself, celebrated August 6. What Testament, from beginning (“…In the beginning is this event that is the object of celebration and was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the commemoration in virtually all Christian Churches Word was God”) to the end (“…I AM the Alpha and (Roman Catholic, Eastern and Oriental Orthodox, and the Omega”). the Church of the East) and denominations?
