SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY – Today we celebrate this beautiful feast of the “Three Kings” in which Our Lord is manifested as the Savior of all mankind. All nations are called to adore the Lord. This feast reminds us of the universality of God’s love for all of us. THANK YOU! – With Christmas this year falling on a Saturday, things were a bit more challenging than usual for our liturgical ministers and our altar decorations group. But everyone worked together to make it all happen. The church still looks beautiful this week after Christmas since we are still in the Christmas season until next Sunday's feast of the Baptism of the Lord. While the rest of the world put away their Christmas decorations on the "first day of Christmas," we do not. We continue to celebrate Christmas throughout these beautiful days of the season. WELCOME FR. COTTER! – This Friday we will welcome back Fr. Donal Cotter once again to our parish. Father Cotter is a priest of the Diocese of Cork and Ross in Ireland. He has been visiting us during the summer for many years. Until, of course, 2020 and 2021 when everything changed in our world. So instead of coming in the summer, he had to postpone his trip and is now joining us in winter. I hope he likes California winters. I'm afraid they're not much different than Irish summers! But we are truly happy to have him back at St. Andrew's! PLAN FOR THE FUTURE! – One of the chief sources of funding for major projects in most parishes comes from bequests which are left to it by faithful parishioners. In every parish I’ve been assigned, almost annually a large financial contribution is received from someone who has remembered the parish in their Last Will and Testament. It is usually not the full amount of the estate (although at times it is) but it is at least a portion. It is also common to name a parish as the beneficiary in a life insurance policy. These types of bequests are vital to the long-term running of the parish as they are the means by which large construction and maintenance projects are funded. I encourage you to prayerfully consider the possibility of remembering the parish in your Will and/or naming it as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. This is a great way of ensuring that your legacy continues long into the future as the parish serves the many other generations. May God reward you for your generosity. NEW GROUP FOR GIRLS AND YOUNG LADIES STARTS THIS MONTH – I'm very happy to announce that we are finally starting two new groups for the girls in the parish: One group will be for girls ages 8-12 calls "Girls with Goodness" and the other is for girls (teens) ages 13-18 called "Girls with Grace." Both of these are being started by several moms and young ladies of our parish and I am very grateful for your leadership and initiative. I had announced this many months ago but, with all the restrictions of the pandemic, things got slowed down. But now we're starting it in the New Year. These two groups for girls and young ladies will well complement our current program for Altar Boys (boys 3rd grade through 8th grade) and Knights of the Altar (young men 9th grade and up through college). These complimentary groups are meant to help our youth to be formed in the Faith and grow in virtue, discipline and goodness. There will be more detailed information in the upcoming bulletins. HAPPY NEW YEAR! – Lastly, on behalf of Father Martin Rodriguez and our entire staff, I want to wish you and your family a very Happy New Year filled with the Lord’s blessings! May 2022 be far better than 2021! In Christ and St. Andrew, Fr. Gonzalez
LET EVERY BABY'S LIGHT SHINE CHRISTMAS TREE IS HERE! As we joyfully prepare to celebrate the birth of Our Lord and Savior, let us also assist mothers who have said Yes to Life. Let Every Baby's Light Shine Christmas tree has star ornaments listing baby items needed to help Mothers who considered abortion, but have said Yes to Life. The baby items will be delivered by Vox Vitae to Los Angeles Pregnancy Services, a pregnancy resource center that has saved over 100 babies from abortion this year. This pregnancy center has nine abortion businesses within one mile of it. Let us help this pregnancy center as they are helping the mothers! Please bring your baby items the first weekend of January, to be delivered to LAPS on January 6, the Feast of the Three Kings. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY 2021-2022 SCHOOL STUDENT NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY The school, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students regardless of race, color, national origin, and/or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, medical condition, sex, or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies and practices, scholarship programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs, although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single-sex schools. While the school does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and continued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student's emotional, academic, and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student's needs. DIRECTOR OF MUSIC The Epiphany of the Lord - January 2, 2022 Introit Ecce advenit dominator Dominus: et regnum in manu eius, et potestas, et imperium. Ps. Deus, iudicium tuum regida: et iustitiam tuam filio regis. Behold, the Lord, your Ruler, has come: and the Kingdom is in his hand, and the power, and the dominion. Psalm verse: Give to the king thy Judgment, O God: and to the king’s Son, thy justice. MUSIC IN THE LITURGY The Epiphany of the Lord, the third highest-ranked feast day of the entire liturgical year, is often not given the care of celebration it calls for. In the visitation of the shepherds commemorated on the feast of the Nativity (Christmas), we see the manifestation of the Incarnate Word to God’s chosen people, the Jews. This feast day marks the epiphany, or manifestation, of the Incarnate Word to the gentiles—that is, to the nations. It is not without good reason, then, that the first reading tells us: “rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you,” for it is true: now God-with-us is made manifest to the Jews. We join our voices with the psalmist to proclaim in the responsorial psalm, “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.” And in the Gospel reading, we read of the gentiles who came at the guidance of a star to adore the Lord. These were the magi, members of the Persian priestly caste of the Zoroastrian religion. Their gifts numbered three, in fulfilment of the prophecy of Isaiah 60 (second reading): “Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord. The three gifts, gold, frankincense, and myrrh, are prophecies, in themselves, that foretell Jesus’s earthly life: gold is for a king—here, for the King of kings—while frankincense is what is offered to a deity; and myrrh, a resin of the myrrh tree (which is related to the tree from which frankincense is obtained) produces a bitter, acrid smoke when burnt, and is linked with funerary customs throughout the near east; this “bitter perfume” foretells Jesus’s death on the cross. Once again, as in the Infancy Narrative, the birth of Christ is linked intimately with his Passion, Death, and Resurrection. This is the reason we sing the full, traditional version of the hymn What Child Is this? In all modern hymnals, even hymnals that purport to be “traditional,” this hymn is truncated and we are left with a refrain at the end of every verse: “This, this is Christ the King whom shepherds guard and angels sing. Haste, haste to bring him laud, the Babe, the Son of Mary.” In reality, this is merely the second half of the strophe. The usually-suppressed second half of strophe 2 reads, “Nails, spear shall pierce him through; the Cross be borne for me, for you. Hail! Hail the Word- Made-Flesh, the Babe, the Son of Mary.” One often reads in pious publications something along the lines of “without the Cross, the Nativity is meaningless.” This is nonsensical because such a separation of things that are inseparable is inconceivable. The salvific act of God in his most gracious coming as Man, his earthly life, his Passion, Death, and Resurrection, are part of a single act of love, the Paschal Mystery. In the same way, in the pre-Vatican II liturgy, the Epiphany celebrated three manifestations: that of Christ to the gentiles in the visit of the Magi; that of his manifestation to the whole world as the Son of God in his baptism at the Jordan; and the manifestation of his power over nature in the Wedding at Cana, changing water into wine at the behest of the Blessed Virgin. It is for this reason that the recessional hymn today—so rich in theology and well worth staying to sing or listen to—speaks of all of these things, for all of them speak to the manifestation—the meaning of “epiphany”—of God-with-us, Emmanuel.

-con-nosotros, Emmanuel.
