Service for the Lord’s Day
January 30, 2022 • Fourth Sunday after Epiphany • 11:00 AM
Welcome to the Presbyterian Church of Llanerch
Through the Spirit of Christ, we are brought together and joined as one community in the worship of God.
Whoever you are, from wherever you have come, you are welcome here.

Our Mission
The Presbyterian Church of Llanerch is an inclusive Christian community whose members have been saved by
God’s grace, united by God in Jesus Christ, and given by God as a light to the nations. Our mission is patterned
after the example of Jesus Christ, who came "not to be served but to serve."
To that end, we seek to think with the mind of Christ, to love with the heart of Christ, and to act as the Lord
requires, doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God.

If You Are New Here
We are especially glad to welcome you if you are visiting with us this morning.

Children in Worship
Children (and their wiggles) are always welcome in worship.

Prepare for Worship
As you come to worship, you are invited to take a few moments to bring yourself before God, to prepare
yourself in heart, mind, soul and strength.

Welcome
  The Lord be with you.
  And also with you.

* Call to Worship
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon us; Isaiah 61:1-3
in Jesus, the Lord has anointed us.
  We are sent
to bring good news to the oppressed,
     to bind up the broken-hearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
     and release to the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.
We celebrate a day of vindication for our God.
We will comfort all who mourn,
we will provide for those who mourn in Zion—
we will give them a garland instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning.
the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.
And they will be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord, to display God's glory.
  Open our lips, O Lord.
And our mouths shall proclaim your praise.
* Opening Prayer
You have anointed us, O God,
and called us to live with kindness and gentleness in this world.
Gift us with your Spirit this morning,
that we may be made ready for your call.
Enrich our faith, that we may praise your name together,
     through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever. Amen.

* Hymn 316 Where Charity and Love Prevail TWENTY-FOURTH
Prayer of Confession
What does the Lord require of us?
To seek justice, and love kindness,
      and walk humbly with God.
Forgive us, Lord, when we shut our eyes to injustice,
preferring our ease and comfort over your mercy.
Forgive us, Lord, when we love our own righteousness,
choosing to appear good rather than do good.
Forgive us, Lord, when we choose to walk alone,
preferring to stand on our own,
rather than trusting in your grace.
(Please offer silently your personal confession.)
Have mercy on us, O God.
May the gift of your Spirit,
inspire and empower us to bear fruit,
that all our neighbors may be nourished.
That they may hunger and thirst no more.
We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

 Assurance of Forgiveness
   Friends, believe the good news:
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
       Thanks be to God!

Scripture Reading Luke 4:14-30
Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread
through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by
 everyone.
When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the
sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was
given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down.
The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, “Today this
scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They
said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”
He said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Doctor, cure yourself!’ And you
will say, ‘Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at
Capernaum.’” And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s
hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the
heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the
land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were
also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except
 Naaman the Syrian.”
When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of
the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might
hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.
The Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God.

We Respond
* Affirmation of Faith The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
     creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
         born of the Virgin Mary,
         suffered under Pontius Pilate,
         was crucified, died, and was buried;
             he descended to the dead.
     On the third day he rose again;
         he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
     the holy catholic church,
     the communion of saints,
     the forgiveness of sins,
     the resurrection of the body,
         and the life everlasting. Amen.

 Gathering of Intercessions and Thanksgivings
 Prayers of the People
  The Lord be with you.
  And also with you.
  Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
During the prayer: God of mercy,
                     hear our prayer.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
   hallowed be thy name,
      thy kingdom come,
      thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
   Give us this day our daily bread;
      and forgive us our debts,
         as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,
         but deliver us from evil.
   For thine is the kingdom,
      and the power,
      and the glory forever. Amen.
