Traditional Service - 11:00 am Scripture for Meditation “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8) Prelude Come, Holy Spirit, Lord God (J.S. Bach) Welcome and Announcements Call to Worship Leader: This is the day the Lord has made. People: Let us rejoice and be glad in it! Leader: The Lord is Risen! People: He is risen indeed! Opening Hymn Come, Thou Almighty King #492 Come, Thou Almighty King, Help us Thy name to sing; Help us to praise. Father all glorious, O'er all victorious, Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days. Come, Thou Incarnate Word, Gird on Thy mighty sword; scatter thy foes. Let thine almighty aid our sure defense be made, Our souls on thee be stayed; thy wonders show. Come, Holy Comforter, Thy sacred witness bear in this glad hour. Thou who almighty art, rule now in every heart, And ne'er from us depart, Spirit of power. To thee, great One in Three, Eternal praises be hence evermore! Thy sovereign majesty may we in glory see, And to eternity love and adore. Responsive Psalm Psalm 29 (NLT) Honor the LORD, you heavenly beings; honor the LORD for his glory and strength. Honor the LORD for the glory of his name. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. The voice of the LORD echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. 4
The LORD thunders over the mighty sea. The voice of the LORD is powerful; The voice of the LORD is majestic, splitting the mighty cedars; the LORD shatters the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon's mountains skip like a calf; he makes Mount Hermon leap like a young wild ox. The voice of the LORD strikes with bolts of lightning. The voice of the LORD makes the barren wilderness quake; The LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD twists mighty oaks and strips the forests bare. ALL: IN HIS TEMPLE EVERYONE SHOUTS, "GLORY!" The LORD rules over the floodwaters. The LORD reigns as king forever. The LORD gives his people strength. The LORD blesses them with peace. Prayer of Adoration Prayer of Confession (Unison) Triune God, we praise you as the God of love and life. Though Jesus prayed that we would be one, we confess that we fail to live in unity with each other and with you. We break our communion through hostile words and unkind actions. We long for your Spirit to heal us and to correct us. We long for you to help us experience communion with you and with each other as we gather around your Word. Even now, dependent on your grace, we commit ourselves to live more fully in the unity you desire. Through Christ, our Lord, Amen. (People silently offer their personal confessions to God.) Assurance of Pardon Romans 8:15-17 Pastor: Friends, believe the Good News: People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Response Glory Be to the Father #961 Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be World without end. Amen, Amen. Anthem Blessed Assurance (arr. Dennis Robert) Scripture Reading Acts 2:22-36 Leader: This is the Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God! Sermon The Message We Share 5
Offertory Komm, heilger Geist, Herre Gott (Come, Holy Ghost, God, and Lord) (Zachau) (Offerings are received weekly via mail, Realm, and online. Those attending live worship can leave their donations in the offering plates in the Narthex.) Doxology Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him, above ye heavenly hosts; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Closing Hymn Fairest Lord Jesus #17 Beautiful Savior! King of Creation! Son of God and Son of Man! Truly I’d love thee, Truly I’d serve thee, Light of my soul, my joy, my crown. Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands, Robed in flowers of blooming spring; Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer; He makes our sorrowing spirit sing. Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight, Bright the sparkling stars on high; Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer than all the angels in the sky. Beautiful Savior! Lord of the nations! Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, Praise, adoration, Now and forevermore be thine! Benediction Postlude Komm, heilger Geist, Herre Gott (Come, Holy Ghost, God, and Lord) (Buxtehude) 6
Reflection Questions Opening Discussion: • If you were to explain the Good News to someone, what would you say? Digging Deeper: • Read Acts 2:22-36 • In verses 22-24, what happens to Jesus, and who carries out the actions towards him? • What do these verses reveal about God the Father? About Jesus’ death? • In verses 25-31, Paul quotes Psalm 16 to show that David was a prophet who foresaw that the Messiah would not die. What does reveal about Jesus’ resurrection? • In verses 32-34, what happens to Jesus after the resurrection and how does this expand our view of who Jesus is? • What is the difference of between Jesus being Messiah and Jesus being Lord? Why is it important to proclaim that he is both? • What did Jesus do after receiving the Holy Spirit? Why is this significant? Life Application: • The Israelites had a limited view of who Jesus was. How might your view of Jesus be limited? • In your personal relationship with Christ, do you tend to emphasize Jesus more as Lord, or more as Messiah/Savior? What actions might you take to help you focus on the less-emphasized aspect of Jesus in your life? • How aware are you of the Holy Spirit’s presence and activity in your own life? How does the Holy Spirit help you in your faith journey? What can you do to live more by the Spirit? Suggestions for Prayer: • Thank God for God the Father’s plan of salvation and for sending Jesus into the world to save us. • Ask God to continue to reveal how you can join in his saving work in the lives of those around you. • Spend time thanking Jesus as the Messiah who came to deliver you from sin and death and ask him to continue conquering sin and old ways of life through the Holy Spirit. • Spend time adoring Jesus as Lord and submit your life to faithfully and obediently living out your life in accordance with his will. • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal itself to you more fully in those areas of your life where there is despair, apathy, ignorance, and sin. 7
