PRELUDE Intermezzo in A Major Brahms

CONFESSION In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
AND Amen.
FORGIVENESS
Let us admit to God the sin which always confronts us.

                Lord God,
                we have sinned against you;
we have done evil in your sight.
                We are sorry and repent.
Have mercy on us according to your love.
Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin.
Renew a right spirit within us
and restore us to the joy of your salvation,
                through Jesus Christ our Lord.
                Amen.

Dear friends, in Jesus Christ your sins are forgiven.
The Lord enrich you with grace,
                and nourish you with blessing;
                the Lord defend you in trouble and keep you from all evil;
                the Lord accept your prayers,
and absolve you from your offences,
for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Saviour.
                Amen.
HYMN
PRAYER OF O God, rich in mercy, by the humiliation of your Son you lifted up
THE DAY this fallen world and rescued us from the hopelessness of death.
Lead us into your light, that all our deeds may reflect your love,
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

READING From Mount Hor [the Israelites] set out by the way to the Red Sea,
NUMBERS to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient
21:4-9 on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why
have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For
there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable
food.” Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people,
and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people
came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against
the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents
from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to
Moses, “Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and every-
one who is bitten shall look at it and live.” So Moses made a serpent
of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit some-
one, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.
Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

SONG “El Shaddai”

GOSPEL The holy gospel according to St. John. Glory to you, O Lord.
JOHN 3:14- [Jesus said:] “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so
21 must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may
have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only
Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may
have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to
condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved
through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but
those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have
not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the
judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved
darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who
do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their
deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to
the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been
             done in God.”
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

SONG
APOSTLES’ I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and
CREED earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who
was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suf-
fered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was bur-
             ied; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the
Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I be-
lieve in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the commun-
ion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the
body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF Relying on the promises of God, we pray boldly for the church, the
THE PEOPLE world, and all in need.

You sent your Son that the world might be saved through him. In-
spire the witness of the church throughout the world. Empower
missionaries, Bible translators, and ministries of service in your
name. Bless our partners in ministry, our ELCA global partner
churches, and Young Adults in Global Mission. Hear us, O God.
             Your mercy is great.
From east to west your steadfast love is shown. Nourish seas and
deserts, wilderness areas and cities. Give water to thirsty lands; nur-
ture spring growth that feeds hungry creatures; bless farmers as they
prepare for the growing season. Hear us, O God.
             Your mercy is great.
You sustained your people in the wilderness. Give courage to all
who lead in times of crisis and scarce resources. Prosper the work
of those who aid victims of famine and drought. Bring peace in
places where scarce resources cause violence. We pray especially this
week for the people of Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Green-
land, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Hear us, O God.
             Your mercy is great.
Your mercy endures forever. Deliver all who cry to you, especially
those who are hungry or without homes. Give healing to those who
are sick and comfort to those who mourn. Hear us, O God.
             Your mercy is great.
By grace we have been saved. Fill this congregation to overflowing
with that grace, that we show mercy to others. Nourish any in our
midst who are hungry, especially children, and bless our ministries
of feeding and shelter. Give us patience and courage when the way
seems long.. Hear us, O God.
               Your mercy is great.
With thanksgiving, we remember those who have died. Keep us in
communion with all the saints until we, at last, find our rest in you.
               Hear us, O God.
               Your mercy is great.
We offer these prayers in the name of the one who lifts us up, Jesus
               Christ our Lord.
               Amen.

SHARING OF The peace of the Lord be with you always.
GOD’S PEACE And also with you.
AND
OFFERING
OFFERTORY Let us pray.
PRAYER God our provider, you have not fed us with bread alone, but with
words of grace and life. Bless us and these your gifts, which we re-
ceive from your bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
              Amen.

DIALOGUE The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our
              thanks and praise.

EUCHARIS- We give you thanks, Father, through Jesus Christ, your beloved Son,
TIC PRAYER whom you sent in this end of the ages to save and redeem us and to
AND WORDS proclaim to us your will. He is your Word, inseparable from you,
OF through whom you created all things, and in whom you take delight.
INSTITUTION He is your Word, sent from heaven to a virgin’s womb. He there
took on our nature and our lot and was shown forth as your Son,
born of the Holy Spirit and of the virgin Mary. He, our Lord Jesus,
fulfilled all your will and won for you a holy people; he stretched out
his hands in suffering in order to free from suffering those who
              trust you.
He is the one who, handed over to a death he freely accepted, in or-
der to destroy death, to break the bonds of the evil one, to crush
hell underfoot, to give light to the righteous, to establish his cove-
nant, and to show forth the resurrection, taking bread and giving
thanks to you, said: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do
this for the remembrance of me.
In the same way he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for
you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the re-
              membrance of me.
Remembering, then, his death and resurrection, we take this bread
and cup, giving you thanks that you have made us worthy to stand
before you and to serve you as your priestly people. Send your Spirit
upon these gifts of your church; gather into one all who share this
bread and wine; fill us with your Holy Spirit to establish our faith in
truth, that we may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus
Christ; through whom all glory and honor are yours, almighty Fa-
ther, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy church, both now and forev-
              er. Amen.
THE LORD’S Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.
PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven,
             hallowed be thy name,
             thy kingdom come,
             thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
             Give us this day our daily bread;
             and forgive us our trespasses,
             as we forgive those
             who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
             but deliver us from evil.
             For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
             forever and ever. Amen.

THE MEAL Taste and see. The Lord is good.

A chime ends a time of reflection.

PRAYER Merciful God, accompany our journey through these forty days. Re-
AFTER THE new us in the gift of baptism, that we may provide for those who
MEAL are poor, pray for those in need, fast from self-indulgence, and
above all that we may find our treasure in the life of your Son, Jesus
Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
             Amen.
HYMN
BLESSING Carry with you the living bread, as a treasure in your hands
AND and your heart . Share it over and over again. It will always be
DISMISSAL enough, as long as you continue to break it. Almighty God,
Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever.
                Amen.

Go in peace. Feed the hungry.
                Thanks be to God.
