Village Church of East Atlanta WELCOME TO VILLAGE CHURCH! Our desire is to be a church that is in, of, and for East Atlanta Village and its surrounding neighborhoods. We believe that the church is not a place to go, or an event to attend, but a community of people who have been changed by the love and grace of God in Jesus Christ. As those who have been so loved, the church is called to love and bless whatever place it finds itself. That’s why we hope to not only be a church that meets in the neighborhood, or is simply made up of people from the neighborhood, but we desire to be for the neighborhood, working for its care and welfare.
Order of Worship :: January 31st, 2020 :: Fourth Sunday After Epiphany “As God’s people, his special possession, the Israelites must know what he requires of them. Being an Israelite is not a matter of private, personal piety. It has vertical and horizontal dimensions, and obedience to God is required on both fronts. After all, if Israelites cannot behave properly toward their God and cannot treat each other as “special people,” as God treats them, how can they ever be a light to the Gentiles? How can they ever be a kingdom of priests in a world that does not know the true God?” ~ Peter Enns GREETING & ANNOUNCEMENTS REMEMBRANCE OF THE LAW: Exodus 20:1-17 The Lord be with you. ASSURANCE OF PARDON: 1 John 1:5-7 HOMILY: “Family Resemblance” Rev. Matthew Armstrong This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, Exodus 20:1-21 that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him This is the Word of the Lord. while we are walking in darkness, Praise to you Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! we lie and do not do what is true; Notes but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. Hear the good news: your sins are forgiven! Thanks be to God! CONFESSION OF FAITH: The Nicene Creed Let us confess our faith together: We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten from the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made; of the same essence as the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and was made human. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried. The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will never end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life. He proceeds from the Father and the Son, and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified. He spoke through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and to life in the world to come. Amen.
