Lighting Of The Advent Wreath
Today starts the season of Advent. A time to prepare our hearts for the true meaning of Christmas,
the birth of Christ and the anticipation of His second coming. Over the next four weeks, we will light a
different candle each week after we hear God speak to us through the prophet Isaiah. These readings
highlight the four themes of family, singing, light, and need. The 5th candle will be lit during our
Christmas Eve service to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Please join us in this call and response:
L: One day we will arrive. One day our hearts will catch sight of the mountain of the LORD.
A: LORD, we want to go there! O God, we long to be in your presence and walk in your ways.
L: Let’s go! All together, let’s make that journey to the mountain of God.
A: Sisters and brothers, friends and strangers, let us travel together. Surely we will get there.
L: Let the dream of that holy mountain give you courage and strength as we go.
A: What a vision: weapons of war turned into tools of harvest, and lessons of peace taught to all
           people.
L: Let us journey together in the light of the LORD!

Invocation
L: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
       A: Amen.

                                                Prayer of the Week
Heavenly Father, I never cease to be amazed at the grace that You
have extended to me and all who have been redeemed by faith in Je-
sus Christ. It is a thing most wonderful that God's own Son should
come from heavenly glory and die to save a sinner like me- and yet it
is in Your Word, which is faithful and true. I thank You with all of my
being. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
Hymn: How Firm A Foundation
      How firm a foundation
      O saints of the Lord
      Is laid for your faith
      In his excellent Word
      What more can he say
Than to you he has said
      Who unto the Savior
      For refuge have fled

Fear not, I am with you
       Oh, be not dismayed
       For I am your God
And will still give you aid
       I’ll strengthen you, help you
       And cause you to stand
       Upheld by my righteous
       Omnipotent hand

       When through fiery trials
       Your pathway shall lie
       My grace, all sufficient
       Shall be your supply
The flames shall not hurt you
       I only design
       Your dross to consume
       And your gold to refine

       Throughout all their lifetime
       My people shall prove
       My sov’reign, eternal
       Unchangeable love
       And then, when gray hairs
       Shall their temples adorn
       Like lambs they shall still
       In my bosom be borne

Brief Order of Confession and Forgiveness
L: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid:
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the Inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly
love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
        A: Amen.
L: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our
sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
           Most merciful God,
A: We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against
you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We
have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For
the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that
we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
L: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake God forgives
you all your sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ he gives the power to become the children
of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit.
       A. Amen.

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 9:6-7
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his
name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the
increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his king-
dom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forev-
ermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.”

       Galatians 4:4-7
“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,
to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because
you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So you are no
longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”

       Romans 8:34
“Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at
the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.”

Scripture Closing
       L. This is the Word of the Lord.
       A. Thanks be to God!

Sermon — “Can’t Cancel Christmas—Advent 1: Need” Pastor Timothy Sternberg

Apostle’s Creed
ALL: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his
only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at
the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of
sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn: Come Thou Long Expected Jesus
      Come, thou long expected Jesus
Born to set thy people free
From our fears and sins release us
Let us find our rest in thee
Israel’s strength and consolation
Hope of all the earth thou art
       Dear desire of ev’ry nation
       Joy of ev’ry longing heart

       Born, thy people to deliver
Born a child, and yet a king
Born to reign in us forever
       Now thy gracious kingdom bring
       By thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone
       By thine all sufficient merit
Raise us to thy glorious throne

Closing Hymn: It Came Upon The Midnight Clear
It came upon the midnight clear
       That glorious song of old
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold
Peace on the earth, good will to all
       From heav’n’s all gracious king
The world in solemn stillness lay
       To hear the angels sing

Still through the cloven skies they come
       With peaceful wings unfurled
And still their heav’nly music floats
       O’er all the weary world
Above its sad and lowly plains
       They bend on hov’ring wing
And ever o’er its babel sounds
       The blessed angels sing

And you, beneath life’s crushing load
       Whose forms are bending low
Who toil along the climbing way
       With painful steps and slow
Look now, for glad and golden hours
       Come swiftly on the wing
On, rest beside the weary road
       And hear the angels sing

For lo! The days are hast’ning on
       By prophets seen of old
When with the ever circling years
       Shall come the time foretold
When peace shall over all the earth
       Its ancient splendors fling
And all the world give back the song which now the angels sing
