Issue number 16 22 October 2020 EDITORIAL Each day I drive to school, the mornings are becoming a little lighter and brighter. The trees are budding and the air smells sweet (even through a mask!). It’s getting easier to get up and out to work in the mornings after a long cold winter in lockdown. Next week, we finally get our year 8, 9 and 10 students back. We are so very happy that our college community will finally be back together once again. Together will look very different than it ever has before, but there will be voices, smiley eyes and play once again. I am anticipating that our older students from years 8, 9 and 10 may feel a certain level of apprehension about their return, and this is only natural. We will be doing our very best to help them settle in and feel at home as quickly as possible. Getting back into school uniform and wearing masks adds another level of thinking in the mornings, and we thank parents in advance for your cooperation in helping our students come back to school well, wearing the right uniform, faces covered appropriately and ready for face to face learning (or half face anyway). We recognise that some of our students will have found the year very tough and may not be coping so well. Please remember that we are here to support, and our Welfare Department staff, Celeste Putter and Andrew Austin, are available to talk and provide guidance. In the same week, we will be celebrating our year 12 students who will have their final classes and celebrations, before heading into swotvac. The VCE English exam begins the process for the majority of students and will be held on Tuesday 10 November. From then on, these students will be deep in exam mode and we thank the rest of the PVCC community for their support during this intense time. The year is rolling on and the events that are usually held in term 4 are all being reassessed. We thank you for your patience as we reconfigure the way that we do things, ever in light of the most recent announcements by the Premier. We await more information about how we can hold transition events such as orientation, and will inform our parent body as soon as we are able. Throughout this strange year of Covid, I am reminded that none of it has caught our God by surprise. He promises to walk with us always, through green pastures and by cool streams and also through the valley of the shadow of death. No matter what is going on around us, He is ever faithful. What a comfort! I thank God that we have the opportunity to be together as a community, as the year draws to a close – to be reminded of the joy of learning in a place that is lead, guided and held by our Heavenly Father. REMINDER FOR BUS TRAVELLERS Please remember to use your student card to tap on and tap off each day when using the bus service. Using your student card ensures that boarding the bus is contactless and in line with covid safe practices and requirements. Replacement student cards can be purchased at the general office for $7.50. UNIFORM SHOP With the uniform shop’s recent relocation to Uni Hill taking place while the lockdown was still in operation, two very key members of our PVCC community quietly slipped away with little fuss or fanfare. The onsite uniform shop has played a significant welcoming and pastoral care role in the life of the college for decades, and we wanted to take the opportunity to have Lydia Ross and Cheryl Stagg back to PVCC for one last time, to sit under the oak tree outside the general office, to say Thank You and give them a chance to reminisce. Lydia (right) was originally employed by the college to manage the sourcing and purchasing of the college uniform. Years later, when Bob Stewart were contracted as the principal supplier, Cheryl joined Lydia at the college and both became employees of Bob Stewart P/L. Both have also been parents of PVCC students over their years. When thinking about the memories that make them smile, they laughed about Year 12 pranks, mischievous students, and maintenance staff running up the road chasing stray farm animals! They both commented on the early days at PVCC, when it was just a small country school and dirt tracks. They have cherished the opportunities to get to know each family as they have arrived at the college; they love the PVCC families and have thoroughly enjoyed serving this community for so long. While Lydia and Cheryl are located at the Bob Stewart Uni Hill store, their shifts do not currently coincide. You can imagine how much they miss each other! However, they want to reassure our families that all Bob Stewart staff are trained in how to fit the PVCC uniform, so if you find yourself in-store and cannot see their familiar faces, you are still in good hands. Thank you, Lydia and Cheryl, for your many years of serving this community onsite here at PVCC. We appreciate you, and will continue to pray for God’s blessing over your service and your families. FROM THE LIBRARY Regina Brownley has joined the library team. Many of you will know Regi as a primary school teacher, but she has stepped up to help in the library for the rest of 2020. She will be posting reviews of some of our latest acquisitions. Here is her first one... ‘Littlelight’ by Kelly Canby An ‘enlightening’ book, written by an Australian author, about a small town divided by differences. The town is eventually brought together at the hand of a young girl as she seeks to make changes piece by piece. Almost all townspeople embrace the changes, except for one, who is fearful and resistant to things that are “different, unusual, strange, offbeat and unfamiliar”. A book that opens up great discussion in children about what it means to love others and embrace differences - after all we are all fearfully and wonderfully made by our Creator. Pearl Fearn-Wannan CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK CELEBRATION We are looking forward to celebrating Children’s Book Week at PVCC next week on Friday 30 October. We invite all Primary students to come in full school uniform with a touch of the Book Week theme, which is “Curious Creatures, Wild Minds.” This can be one of the following: a head piece, hat, hair decorations, a scarf, shoes, socks, eye mask or mouth mask. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, we cannot perform a whole school parade. Please note: this is not a casual clothes day for students. BACK TO SCHOOL FOR YEAR 7 SPORT Here’s some Covid safe physical exercise our year 7’s have been engaging in since their return to school. They are loving some sport and the camaraderie that goes with it! All activities are outside and where possible are non contact and socially distanced, gear is sanitised afterwards and students are reminded about hand hygiene. Masks can be worn around the wrist if activities are moderate to vigorous. This week the year 7’s did some skittles soccer, soft lacrosse and frisbee golf. Hopefully there will be some more competitive activities soon! Helen Padget Head of Secondary Sport Because we are Christ’s Image Bearers, we: Learn Courageously 6
