I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. John 11:25,26 Welcome This service is to remember with thanksgiving those who have died. Although we will particularly remember those who have died this past year by name, this service is open to all who wish to remember family members or friends who have died. Later in the service there will be an opportunity to light a candle in remembrance, and we invite you to have a candle and matches with you for this portion of the service. As we do at regular Zoom Sunday services, we will be keeping everyone on mute for the service and have just one responder answer aloud for everyone. However, you are encouraged to say the parts that are in bold at home while you are on mute. Prelude: Agnus Dei Bells (Arr. Mark Matterson) Collect Leader: Father of all, we pray to you for those we love, but see no longer. Grant them your peace, let light perpetual shine upon them, and in your loving wisdom and almighty power, work in them the good purpose of your perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 2
Opening Hymn: ‘Abide with Me’ (verses 1,3,5) 1. Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. 3. I need thy presence every passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter’s power? Who like thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. 5. Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies; heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee: in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. The Proclamation of the Word Epistle 1 Peter 1:3-9 Reader: A reading from Peter. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, 3
so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Psalm 116:1-8 Together: I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my supplications. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live. The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish. Then I called on the name of the LORD: ‘O LORD, I pray, save my life!’ Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful. The LORD protects the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Return, O my soul, to your rest, for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you. For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. 4
Gospel John 6:37-40 Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’ Reader: The Gospel of Christ. People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Homily The Rev. Maria Nightingale The Prayers of the People Leader: Let us pray. Almighty God, you have knit your chosen people together in one communion, in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Give to your whole Church in heaven and on earth your light and your peace. People: Hear us, Lord. Leader: Grant to your faithful people pardon and peace, that we may be cleansed from all our sins and serve you with a quiet mind. People: Hear us, Lord. 5
Leader: Grant to all who mourn a sure confidence in your loving care, that casting all their sorrow on you, they may know the consolation of your love. People: Hear us, Lord. Leader: Give courage and faith to those who are bereaved, that they may have strength to meet the days ahead in the comfort of a holy and certain hope, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love. People: Hear us, Lord. Leader: Grant us grace to entrust those who have departed this life to your never-failing love which sustained them in this life. Receive them into the arms of your mercy, and remember them according to the favour you bear for your people. People: Hear us, Lord. Candle Lighting Leader: As the name of your loved one is read, I invite you now to light your candle and, while remaining on mute, say aloud “(Name), I light this candle in your memory." 6

Leader: Gathering all our prayers together for our loved ones and for ourselves we say together: People: Support us, Lord, all the day long of this troubled life, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then Lord, in your mercy, give us safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen. Lord’s Prayer Together: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those Who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, And the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 8
Blessing Leader: THE LORD bless you, and keep you. The LORD make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. The LORD lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace, both now and evermore. Amen. Closing Hymn ‘I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say’ 1. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me and rest; lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast.” I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad. 2. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give the living water; thirsty one, stoop down and drink and live.” I came to Jesus and I drank of that livegiving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. 9
3. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s light; look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright.” I looked to Jesus and I found in him my star, my sun; and in that light of life I’ll walk till travelling days are done. Dismissal Leader: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Abide with Me #97976 Contributors: Public Domain Tune: William H. Monk (1823-1889) Text: Henry F.
