A note from Fr. Bill… Ecce Agnus Dei, Part IV Our desire in restarting this series on the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist is to defend the Truth, combat rampant unbelief, and strengthen the personal faith of believers. Equally, the aim is to build confidence in our community to live our beautiful Catholic faith devoutly and witness to our faith vigorously. Please consider reviewing the introductory discussions of the “source and summit of the Christian life” as found in Parts I, II, & III of the series, still available on the parish website and on our Facebook page. Following the model of the Church, we began our defense of the Eucharist (see Part III) with the words of Jesus in Holy Scripture. In John, Chapter 6, Jesus declares and defines his Eucharistic self: “I am the bread of life” (v.48). He knew this statement could be interpreted as pure metaphor, so to clarify further: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world” (v.51). A quarrel broke out among the listeners, strong- ly suggesting they took Jesus’ words literally. To drive the point home: “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink” (vv. 54-55). The vivid realism of our Lord’s speech counters any thoughts of a symbolic interpretation, as does the distressed response of some disciples: “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” (v.60). “As a re- sult of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him” (v.66). Metaphorical language would not be expected to elicit such a dramatic response. Jesus was believed to be speaking literally. He had every opportunity to clarify his teaching as merely sym- bolic, but he did exactly the opposite. At the Last Supper, there was no question about what Jesus meant: “Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This IS my body . . .’” (Luke 22:19). The early Church Fathers were of one accord regarding the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eu- charist (excerpts taken from Real Presence Eucharistic Education and Adoration Association). St. Ignatius of Antioch (c.110 A.D.) “I have no taste for corruptible food nor for the pleasures of this life. I desire the Bread of God, WHICH IS THE FLESH OF JESUS CHRIST.” (Letter to the Ro- mans 7:3) St. Cyril of Jerusalem (c.350 A.D.) “For just as the bread and the wine of the Eucharist before the holy invocation of the adorable Trinity were simple bread and wine, but the invocation having been made, THE BREAD BECOMES THE BODY OF CHRIST AND THE WINE THE BLOOD OF CHRIST.” (Catechetical Lectures 19) St. Augustine (354-430 A.D.) "What you see is the bread and the chalice; that is what your own eyes report to you. But what your faith obliges you to accept is that THE BREAD IS THE BODY OF CHRIST AND THE CHALICE [WINE] THE BLOOD OF CHRIST." (Sermons 272) From the moment of the Institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper unto today, the Real Presence of Jesus has been believed and taught. The current tragedy of unbelief cannot, therefore, be blamed on insufficient historical precedent. Such apostasy has been a creeping evil over time. It will not be eradicated by any superficial intervention. Our ongoing discussion will search for some clues to the root causes of the current Eucharistic crisis. Praised be Jesus Christ.
