PRELUDE CONFESSION In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. AND Amen. FORGIVENESS Jesus says, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.” So let us turn away from sin and turn to the Lord, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. We have willfully misused your gifts of creation; Lord, be merciful: forgive us our sin. We have seen the ill-treatment of others and have not gone to their aid; Lord, be merciful: forgive us our sin. We have condoned evil and dishonesty and failed to strive for justice; Lord, be merciful: forgive us our sin. We have heard the good news of Christ, but have failed to share it with others; Lord, be merciful: forgive us our sin. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of ☩ Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Al- mighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen. 2
HYMN YE WATCHERS AND YE HOLY ONES GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the com- munion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. HYMN OF Above all powers above all kings PRAISE Above all nature and all created things ABOVE ALL Above all wisdom and all the ways of man You were here before the world began Above all kingdoms above all thrones Above all wonders the world has ever known Above all wealth and treasures of the earth There's no way to measure what you're worth 3
Crucified laid behind a stone You lived to die rejected and alone Like a rose trampled on the ground You took the fall and thought of me Like a rose trampled on the ground You took the fall and thought of me above all. PRAYER OF Almighty God, in choosing the virgin Mary to be the mother of your THE DAY Son, you made known your gracious regard for the poor, the lowly, and the despised. Grant us grace to receive your word in humility, and so to be made one with your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. READING Because [the] shame [of God’s people] was double, ISAIAH 61:7- and dishonor was proclaimed as their lot, 11 therefore they shall possess a double portion; everlasting joy shall be theirs. For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 4
PSALM I will bless the Lord at all times; PSALM 34:1-9 the praise of God shall ever be in my mouth. I will glory in the Lord; let the lowly hear and rejoice. Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; let us exalt God’s name together. I sought the Lord, who answered me and delivered me from all my terrors. Look upon the Lord and be radiant, and let not your faces be ashamed. I called in my affliction, and the Lord heard me and saved me from all my troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear the Lord and delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who take refuge in God! Fear the Lord, you saints of the Lord, for those who fear the Lord lack nothing. READING When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a GALATIANS woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under 4:4-7 the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 5
GOSPEL ACCLAMA- TION GOSPEL This is the holy gospel according to St. Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. LUKE 1:46-55 Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.” The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 6
HOMILY HYMN OF THE DAY THE ANGEL GABRIEL FROM HEAVEN CAME APOSTLES’ I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and CREED earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suf- fered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he as- cended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 7
PRAYERS OF Let us come before our Triune God in prayer. THE PEOPLE You have revealed your love for people overlooked and cast aside, sending your son to be born among the humble and poor. Send your church to proclaim good news to those who feel abandoned, des- pised, or rejected and make our congregations places of genuine wel- come and hospitality. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. All creation longs for healing and restoration. Thwart the destruction of plant and animal habitats and amplify the voices of those who ad- vocate for wise stewardship of the earth’s resources. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We remember your promise to our ancestors and look to you for jus- tice. Expose pride, greed, and exploitation wherever it is found and raise up humble leaders who act on behalf of those who are poor, oppressed, or in other need. We pray especially this week for the peo- ple of Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Your Spirit lives in our hearts and makes us heirs of salvation. Res- cue us from shame and dishonor. Lift up the lowly, fill the hungry with good things, and have mercy on those who turn to you for help. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Change the hearts of all those who are carried away by hatred, that they may find in you the hope of salvation, and that they may be- come messengers of peace for ever. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. With thanksgiving, we remember those who have died. Keep us in communion with all the saints until we, at last, find our rest in you. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We offer these prayers in the name of the one who fill us with song, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. SHARING OF And may the peace of the Lord be with you always. CHRIST’S And also with you. PEACE The assembly greets one another with a gesture of peace. 8
