Congregational responses are in bold print. Lyrics for the songs are listed at the back of the bulletin. GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. WELCOME SONG ...................................................................................................................... Hear Our Praises GREETING WITH PEACE CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Psalm 46) The earth shakes, the mountains quake—tempting our hearts to fear. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Storms rage, winds swirl. Still, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. There is conflict and violence around the world. Yet God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. For those mourning and rebuilding after storms, God is their refuge. For those living in fear of their neighbors, God is their strength. For the distraught and displaced from Haiti, Afghanistan, in Boston, the Merrimack Valley, and elsewhere, God is a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear. CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Children may be dismissed to Sunday School. OPENING PRAYER
GOSPEL ..........................................................................................................................John 8:31-36 Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teaching. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They responded, “We are Abraham’s children; we’ve never been anyone’s slaves. How can you say that we will be set free?” Jesus answered, “I assure you that everyone who sins is a slave to sin. A slave isn’t a permanent member of the household, but a son is. Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you really will be free.” MESSAGE SONG ........................................................................................................................ 10,000 Reasons CONFESSION OF FAITH This Confession of Faith is taken from the New Zealand prayer book. You, O God, are supreme and holy. You create our world and give us life. Your purpose overarches everything we do. You have always been with us. You are God. You, O God, are infinitely generous, good beyond all measure. You came to us before we came to you. You have revealed and proved Your love for us in Jesus Christ, Who lived and died and rose again. You are God. You, O God, are Holy Spirit. You empower us to be your gospel in the world. You reconcile and heal; you overcome death. You are our God. We worship You. Amen.
PREPARATION OF PRAYERS AND GIFTS You are invited to include your prayers of concern or celebration for today on the sheet at the back of the worship space. OFFERING MUSIC .................................................................................................. God Is My Refuge Let us pray for the world, the body of Christ, and all who yearn for wholeness of life. Show your righteousness, God of justice, that all who are oppressed and marginalized, forgotten, and cast aside would be given voice by elected leaders and compassionate citizens. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Make wars to cease in all the world, God of peace, that all strife, violence, and bloodshed give way to reconciliation, compassion, and new life. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Take us by our hand, God of companionship, when we are paralyzed by our fears and unable to step out in boldness. Give us courage to walk confidently with you. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Give your stillness, God of calm, to all who are facing illness, surgery, or any uncertainty of health, especially Andrew, the Rohr family, Sarah Johnson, Tim Tincknell, Mackenzie Gagnon, Lori Gardner, Phil Liaboe, James Lino, Melanie Armstrong, and Art Derbyshire. May they know that their times are in your ever-healing hands. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Listen to us when we call upon you, most merciful God, and grant us grace to entrust our lives and our world to your unfailing love, through Christ our Lord. Amen. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Let us pray. Lord, too often we have not heard the cries of those in need; we have turned our backs on opportunities to serve you by serving others. Help us to truly understand the commandments to love you with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind. Let us care for our neighbors both far and near. Bring us back to your loving light. In the midst of our darkness and ignorance, the bright light of God’s love shines through, healing our anguished souls. Rejoice, beloved of God, for God’s love and forgiveness are given to you this day. Amen.
MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. COMMUNION PRAYER We echo the words of Jesus spoken at his Last Supper. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. LORD’S PRAYER This version of the Lord’s Prayer is taken from the words Jesus taught his followers when they asked him how to pray in the gospel of Luke. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION This is the table, not of the church, but of Jesus. Come, because it is Jesus who invites you. CLOSING PRAYER O God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils and possibilities unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. BLESSING God be your comfort, your strength; God be your hope and support; God be your light and your way; and the blessing of God, Creator, Redeemer and Giver of life, remain with you now and for ever. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENTS SONG .........................................................................................................................My Savior Lives
