Meditation Texts When Jesus teaches us to pray “Give us today our daily bread,” He is first of all training us to see ourselves in a certain way in relation to God. To the surprise of His status- conscious disciples, He insists, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt 18:3) If there is one fact that is obvious about children, it is their dependence. – Wesley Hill The state of ecstasy involves and requires poverty. It means letting go of our possessions and the identity which our talents and our riches give us. It means being willing to become a person enveloped and irradiated by a different order of splendor, by a power beyond possession. Anyone who has loved ecstatically knows that in that condition he or she lives in a state where riches have absolutely no meaning. When Jesus calls men to poverty, it is that they may be emptied of small and sterile goods, of the goods cut down to the proportions of human control, and thereby filled with a transcendent good, with the glory of God. In that sense, no one can ever be related to God by way of possession, but only by way of being possessed. The price of ecstasy is poverty. - Arthur McGill First Baptist Church is a thriving community in Christ where we all participate in worship and are transformed by mission.
