GATHERING Welcoming Gathering Music “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” Arrangement: Marilyn Ham Joanne Inkman, piano Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; there is no shadow of turning with Thee. Thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not. As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be. Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me! Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above join with all nature in manifold witness To thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me! Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, strength for today, and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside. Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me! Text: Thomas O. Chisholm, 1923 Prayer of the Day (Unison) Jackie Rountree Loving God, as I break the fast of evening rest give me an appetite for your good gifts. Let my hunger be satisfied with the nourishing bread of life you offer in Jesus Christ, that I may receive strength for the journey this day holds. Amen.
Hymn “As a Chalice Cast of Gold” Hymn # 429 Tom Carlton, baritone As a chalice cast of gold, burnished, bright and brimmed with wine, make me, Lord, as fit to hold grace and truth and love divine. Let my praise and worship start with the cleansing of my heart. Save me from the soothing sin of the empty cultic deed and the pious, babbling din of the claimed but unlived creed. Let my actions, Lord, express what my tongue and lips profess. When I bend upon my knees, clasp my hands, or bow my head, let my spoken, public pleas be directly, simply said, free of tangled words that mask what my soul would plainly ask. When I dance or chant your praise, when I sing a psalm or hymn, when I preach your loving ways, let my heart add its Amen. Let each cherished outward rite thus reflect your inward light. Prayer for New Beginnings Liz Jenkins God of the morning watches, my soul waits for you, and I hope in your word. Bread of life, nourish, strengthen, and accompany me throughout this day, that I may labor In love, share with the needy, and imitate your love. Amen.
THE WORD Prayer for Illumination Nancy McKay God of daybreak, our souls wait for your light more than those who watch for the morning. Let your Holy Spirit illumine our hearts with the light of your redemption, a new day, a new life in Christ. Amen. 1st Reading Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9 Sally Gant So now, Israel, give heed to the statutes and ordinances that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live to enter and occupy the land that the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything from it, but keep the commandments of the LORD your God with which I am charging you. You must observe them diligently, for this will show your wisdom and discernment to the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people!” For what other great nation has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is whenever we call to him? And what other great nation has statutes and ordinances as just as this entire law that I am setting before you today? But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children's children— Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 2nd Reading Mark: 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 Rev. Steve Pharr Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.’ You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.” Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.” For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Lord’s Prayer (Unison) Ecumenical Version Nancy McKay Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Affirmation of Faith (Unison) From a Brief Statement of Faith Jackie Rountree We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God's image, male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still. Invitation to the Offering Liz Jenkins Christ loved us and sacrificed for us. As beloved children, let us be imitators of God, presenting our gifts as a fragrant offering and sacrifice, through Christ our Lord. Prayer of Thanksgiving/Dedication Nancy McKay Generous, transforming God, thank you for the blessing of labor, through which you have provided these gifts for our hands to share with those in need. We dedicate them now as an expression of your love for the world, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
