First United Methodist Church of London Easter Sunrise Worship April 21, 2019 - 7:00 a.m. We are disciple-making, Christ-Loving Church, celebrating our our third century of service to God and our Community! WELCOME OUR PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP (unison) Morning has broken, but this morning is different. The birds are singing tunes of joy in the trees surrounding the graves. The flower buds are bursting in colors vibrant around each stone. We’ve come to visit the grave of a friend, but “he is not here.” The Sun is rising in the East; the shadowed grays turn bright! The Son is risen in our Hearts; darkness and death end in defeat. Now we understand what Christ said, what God did. Now we can proclaim, CHRIST IS RISEN! HALLELUJAH! Amen. ORGAN PRELUDE Toccata on Easter Hymn Richard K. Fitzgerald (b. 1979) CALL TO WORSHIP* (stand) Leader Christ is risen! People Christ is risen indeed! Leader Death has been swallowed in victory. People The grave has lost its sting. Leader Christ is risen. People Christ is risen indeed! HYMN* Christ the Lord Is Risen Today UMH 302 Tune: Easter Hymn AFFIRMATION OF FAITH* (unison) The Apostles’ Creed (traditional) UMH 881 I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 3
GLORIA PATRI* Glory be to the Father UMH 70 Tune: Meineke Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. SPECIAL READING A Poem for Easter Rev. R. Preston Price (1710-1778) Like a blade of grass pushing up stubbornly through the sidewalk. or Like the butterfly emerging from the tomb-like chrysalis. But much more. Like the seed after years of dormant death sending up sprout. or Like the brown bulb breaking forth from brown earth into brilliant color. But much more. Like brilliant daybreak after stormy, darkened night. or Like a rainbow mystically appearing amidst the rain. But much more. Like a patient making an unexpected, unpredicted turn for health. or Like the pine cone opening to spread seed only after touched by fiery death. But much more. Like a beautiful vase emerging from a lump of clay in the potter’s hands. or Like a hidden spring burbling forth in the middle of a barren desert. But much more. Like the surprise of Spring’s buds pushing aside Winter’s snow. or Like someone finally emerging from the fatality of addiction. But much more. So, it comes. Nothing else like it. No image adequate. No simile. No metaphor. Unable to talk about it but inadequately We celebrate this great, real mystery that Neither language nor imagination can encompass. Easter!
