HE PĀNUI TĒNEI KI NGĀ URI/MOKOPUNA O WHANGANUI NUI TONU Our Wānanga is open to uri/descendants of WAKA Whānau who do not have access to their own waka must indicate numbers and names of those who require a seat on a waka to Ash Patea prior to November 2015. Please note that Hire fees do apply. (Ash Patea 0278434313) There are limited seats so early notice is encouraged. You may be asked to pay a bond to the Tira Committee, to secure your place. Book early to save disappointment due to the limited number available. Two and six man Canadian waka are the approved craft for the Tira Hoe Waka. Kayaks are permitted; however, you are reminded that you must carry all of your own equipment on board with you. If you choose to bring your own waka you will need to gain approval from the Safety Coordinator at least two months prior to the commencement date. Your waka hire and transportation of waka to Taumarunui and pick-up from Whanganui is your responsibility. ALL steerers will need to be approved and attend steering wānanga. These dates will be communicated well in advance. Waka hire arrangements are your responsibility and not included in the registration cost. KAIHOE All kaihoe must be 12 years of age and over. Rangatahi aged 12-17 years inclusive, must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. The caregiver must accompany them on the water for the whole duration of the Wānanga. The Committee request at least a 1:3 ratio, meaning 1 adult for every 3 rangatahi. Kaihoe are encouraged to be reasonably fit and healthy due to the physical components of the Wānanga. It is the individuals’ responsibility to know their limits and manage their personal health. For the your safety it is strongly encouraged that persons who take regular medication visit their doctor/health professional before commencing the Tira to ensure you are well prepared. It will be your responsibility to manage your health and wellbeing. SAFETY The captains of each roopu carry basic First Aid supplies but the Tira cannot always ensure there is a trained medical response person with the Wānanga at all times. If you are aware that you are not feeling well at any time you must tell your captain and or any member of the coordination team early. To avoid being unwell in the isolated stretches. Emergency evacuation are at the cost of the individual. Safety is paramount and the Coordinator is committed to this and will make decisions accordingly. RANGATAHI Whānau are reminded that this is a Wānanga. Rangatahi must be encouraged and supervised to participate fully and complete all responsibilities as part of the Tira Whānau. Don’t send your Rangatahi, BRING THEM. The registration team will strictly monitor this at registration time. If the Coordinator is not satisfied that there is adequate supervision (1:3) for Rangatahi they will discuss this with their accompanying whanau and have the final decision as to whether they are able to be on the water. Please do not be offended, this is for their safety as well as the entire Tira. ENVIRONMENTAL The Tira Hoe Waka is committed to protecting the Awa and supporting our Marae by attempting to have the least impact. Water quality continues to be an issue for our communities. Environmental Safe Body Wash and Shampoo will be supplied. You may choose to purchase your own supply. The preferred brand is Ecostore Body Wash. MINIMIZING WASTE – Please be mindful, what you bring in, you should take it out. Lolly papers and other food wrappers are not to be left for others to pick up. If you bring it in, you take it out.
SUITABLE CLOTHING – Please name your belongings HELPFUL HINTS FOR THOSE NEW TO THE TIRA Sun hat MAXIMUM gear weight on the river is 15kgs per person. 2 Thermal leggings/long johns You will have to carry all your own gear with you on your 2 Thermal tops (woollen) waka. Bring what you think you need to the start of the Swimsuit/togs Tira and your leaders will give advice on what is essential 1 pair of Sandshoes or Water sandals and what is not! Remember this is a wānanga, not a 3 x tee-shirts or singlet (quick drying, not cotton) holiday, and the comforts of home belong at home! 1 x Tracksuit/nightwear Underwear 3 x pairs shorts DAY BAG: Carry with you at all times a water bottle and a 1 x thick socks small ‘dry bag’ or waterproof bucket with essential items 1 x Raincoat 1 x Warm jersey (light weight) when on the Awa. It could include personal hand sanitizer, Optional Wet suit toilet paper/wipes. Sunscreen, lip balm. Wrap/Sun hat. Rubbish bag for wet gear Ladies (Wrap, skirt, personal items). A separate rubbish bag for personal items/rubbish SAFETY: KEEPING HYDRATED AND SAFE FROM THE Male – long trousers for whakaeke marae ELEMENTS IS IMPORTANT. DRINK THROUGHOUT THE Female – blacks (skirts, sarong/wrap) for whakaeke marae DAY, WEAR A SUN HAT/GLASSES AND IF POSSIBLE COVER UP TO REDUCE ILLNESS FROM SUN STROKE. ESSENTIAL ITEMS Own canoe and paddles Wear suitable thermal clothing that is fast drying. Personal hand sanitizer Participants are urged to ask questions and when 1 packet of water proof plasters required to take action if they believe any Diastop (anti diahorrea pills) person/s lives may be in danger. If in doubt, speak Antiseptic or iodine (sml bottle) up. Needle and cotton Recording parts of the Tira are prohibited and the home people of each marae/rohe will determine what can be captured. Ask for permission, if unsure speak to your team captain.
