2 Being Yourself – not someone else It is easy to wish that we were as clever as someone else, as attractive as someone else, as successful as someone else. We are each unique individuals and we do not want to be a clone. It is right to want to be the best person you can be; that is what God wants, that you try to perfect the gifts and talents He has given you. He doesn’t want us to use our individuality as an excuse to do what just pleases us without considering others, to not follow the rules or to be disrespectful of others. In Science Week it is appropriate to think about how amazing our bodies are; all the amazing parts that are different but work together (Romans 12:4); the eye cannot breathe, the ear cannot digest food. When we wish that we were like someone else, we lose sight of who we really are and we forget to be thankful for the way God made us. God made each of us to do what He wants us to do, if we continue to compare ourselves to others we may find ourselves full of anxiety, may have feelings of inferiority, maybe jealousy and not able to do what we can do well. “A pear can’t be an apple, so be the best pear you can be”. The apostle Paul knew his strengths and weaknesses and he didn’t try to be the person that others thought he should be, he was true to himself and true to God and what he knew God wanted of him. Appreciating yourself and accepting that you are different to others is the way to be content and to be able to live a joyful, purposeful life. If we get caught up in comparing ourselves to others we won’t be able to find our true calling in life. Rev. John Flynn, the man who started the Royal Flying Doctor Service, (the man on the $20 note), once said, “Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers, but for powers equal to your tasks”. Don’t think because you are not good at a particular thing you will never be able to be involved in something you want to be; if God has a task for you, He will give you the skill for that task, no matter how ill equipped you may think you are. Trust God always to use your own unique personality to carry out amazing and surprising things in your life. Be content to be who you are. 4 Operation Christmas Child It’s that time of year where RCCC begins to prepare for Operation Christmas Child. For those families who are new to the school and may be unaware of this special initiative, it is a wonderful opportunity for us to spread love and kindness at Christmas time to children around the world who are less fortunate. The organisation Samaritan’s Purse runs this promotion each year for families to donate goods to be packed into shoeboxes, which are then sent to children overseas. We raised over $230 through the "Crazy Hair Day" and this money will go towards buying suitable gifts. Students interested in helping to pack shoeboxes will have the opportunity in the last week of Term 3. For any families who wish to still donate gift items, please see the list attached to this week’s newsletter. Please note that all items MUST be brand new (no op shop items or previously loved items, please). Gifts can be for either a boy or a girl up to the age of 12. Gifts must be brought to the school by 13th September (end of week 8). Link to gift ideas: https://www.samaritanspurse.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/2017-Shoebox-Gift-Ideas.pdf Thank you! We are encouraging all students and staff to plan their costumes to be based around one of the following themes below, which exhibit some of the powerful results that come from reading: Reading is my secret to happiness – Come dressed as a clown/hobby/sport related. Reading is my secret to discovering knowledge about God – Come as a bible character. Reading is my secret to travelling to different countries – Come dressed in a national costume of another country. Reading is my secret to travelling back in time – Come dressed as a famous person from history. Parents and family members are invited to attend the short assembly in the Multipurpose Hall on Thursday morning starting at 9.15am sharp; students will parade their costumes and share a brief explanation of their costume and the character and book they are representing.
