They will be given privileges to “camp out” with their favorite book do all of the classroom jobs with a social distancing helper. Pick an extra recess for the class, choose our brain breaks and yoga stretches, choose a lunch time story or cartoon to watch smore treats & more!
HOMEWORK Homework is a chance for students to practice important study skills and for parents to be in touch with what their child is learning in the classroom. Parents are partners in their child’s learning, so parent help with homework is valued and important for their child’s success in school. Homework will be given Monday through Thursday and should take approximately 20 minutes each night. Our second-grade homework routine will be: Monday Reading & Spelling Practice Tuesday Reading & Math Practice Wednesday Reading & Phonics Practice Thursday Spelling Practice and Scholastic News Students will write all homework assignments each morning in their agendas. Please read and sign or initial your child’s agenda daily!
READING 2nd graders are expected to be actively engaged in reading for a minimum of 15- 20 minutes every night. Reading minutes for each day should be marked in the “book” on your agenda’s calendar for that month/day. SELECTING APPROPRIATE MATERIALS An essential element in fostering successful reading is the appropriateness of the selected material. The materials your child reads at home (for homework or pleasure) should be at his/her independent reading level. (Helpful hint – use the “Five Finger Rule.” Instruct your child to read the chosen material aloud to you (or choose a page from a lengthy book.) Each time your child is unable to correctly read a word, put up one finger. If you have five fingers up before the end of the book or page, chances are it is too difficult for independent reading.)
WAYS TO READ Read Aloud Your child reads to you (or another child). You (or another adult) read to your child. Your child reads to a younger (or older) sibling/friend. Unison Reading You read the book together simultaneously Shared Reading You “share” the reading by taking turns with your child. Popcorn Reading You begin reading and spontaneously stop and say “popcorn, child’s name.” Then reading responsibility back and forth. Whisper Reading Your child reads the material in a whisper voice while an adult listens. After the child has finished reading, the adult praises specific strategies the child used during Reading. Silent Reading Your child reads silently and then you discuss what he/she has read
WRITING WE USE SIX TRAIT WRITING AND FOUR-SQUARE WRITING ALONG WITH JOURNAL WRITING PROMPTS AND DAILY LANGUAGE REVIEW TO ENSURE STUDENTS ARE LEARNING AND APPLYING FOUNDATIONAL WRITING SKILLS AND PRACTICING THREE STYLES OF WRITING: NARRATIVE, INFORMATIONAL AND OPINION WRITING.
MATH GO MATH: Practice worksheets for each lesson will be sent as homework once a week. Please assist your child as needed. These are sent after we have completed the lesson, so they should be familiar with the skill. If they have difficulty return it and I will help them in the morning or before our next math lesson.
SPELLING: This will be sent home as homework on Monday and Thursday. We are starting a new spelling curriculum this year that aligns with the third-grade classroom. This includes phonics, reading, writing, and thinking skills. Students will write the weekly spelling words in their agendas and given choices of ways to practice their spelling words at home using a variety of methods.
INCOMPLETE WORK Any tasks that are incomplete due to nonproductive work time will be sent home for completion. Please return the work as soon as possible. TAKE HOME FOLDER Each child will have a RED Take Home Folder brought home on Fridays. Please review his/her papers and ask them to share their learning with you. These papers do not need to come back to school. If you have questions or concerns, you can write me a note and return it inside your child’s folder. Praise your child for his/her efforts and celebrate their successes!
RESTROOM They may sign out to use the restroom pass two times per day; once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Students may also excuse themselves from the classroom if it is an emergency and may use the restroom during lunchtime or recess. I remind students that this is not a time to take a mini-vacation, from class work, especially if they have a classmate that may be waiting to go. ASSESSMENT Several types of formal assessment are used in second grade to help determine how best to meet individual student needs, as well as to inform parents of the progress of their child. Assessments given this year include: • DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) RAZ Kids Reading assessments • Other Classroom based Assessments using Go Math Curriculum • MAPs Measures of Academic Progress in the Fall and Spring
