First Presbyterian Church Edmonton, Alberta (Founded 1881) 3rd Sunday after Pentecost 11:00 am — June 20, 2021 Morning Worship PRELUDE Improvisation on the hymns Joachim Segger LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE PASSING OF THE PEACE Leader: “The Peace of Christ be with you.” People: “And also with you.” WELCOME AND INTIMATIONS
CALL TO WORSHIP WE APPROACH GOD HYMN: 676 Jesus, lover of my soul 1 Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high; hide me, O my Savior, hide, till the storm of life is past; safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last! 2 Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing. 3 Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of thee; spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity.
PRAYERS OF APPROACH: Jesus, we take great comfort in your words: "peace be still." We praise you that you come to us in the storms of life; and even in terrible storms you enable our capacity for love to grow. Even in terrible storms we find that we can still learn and grow and open ourselves up to you. Help us to know, Jesus, that the worst storms, are the ones caused by our fear, when we grow afraid of losing our power, or we grow suspicious of the power of others, or when we refuse to acknowledge your mysterious authority. Forgive us, Lord. Here in the storm, Jesus, we need you, we need each other, and we need the love you give us to share. Forgive us for holding on tightly to fear and lead us through sacrifice and self-giving to peace and calm. We pray in your name. Amen. KYRIE ELEISON (Lord have mercy) DECLARATION OF PARDON THE LORD’S PRAYER (sung): Hymn #831 Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and
the power and the glory forever. Amen. ANTHEM Like as a Father Cherubini/Lovelace Like as a father, filled with compassion Pities all his children, So the Lord has mercy on those who fear him SHARING A STORY HYMN: 689 Simply trusting every day 1. Simply trusting every day, trusting through a stormy way, even when my faith is small, trusting Jesus, that is all. Refrain: Trusting as the moments fly, trusting as the days go by, trusting him whate'er befall, trusting Jesus, that is all. 2. Brightly doth his Spirit shine into this poor heart of mine; while he leads I cannot fall, trusting Jesus, that is all. 3. Singing, if my way be clear, praying, if the path be drear, if in danger for him call,
trusting Jesus, that is all. 4. Trusting him while life shall last, trusting him till earth be past, till within the jasper wall, trusting Jesus, that is all. WE HEAR GOD’S WORD RESPONSIVE PSALM: Psalm 107:1-3,23-32 (Refrain I) R: Wellspring source of life eternal, drench our dryness make us whole. 1 O give thanks to the Lord, for the Lord is good; God’s steadfast love endures forever. 2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those redeemed from trouble 3 and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. R: Wellspring source of life eternal, drench our dryness make us whole. 23 Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters; 24 they saw the deeds of the Lord,
wondrous works in the deep. 25 For God commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. 26 They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their calamity; 27 they reeled and staggered like drunkards, and were at their wits’ end. 28 Then in their trouble they cried to the Lord , who brought them out from their distress; 29 The Lord made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 Then they were glad because they had quiet, and God brought them to their desired haven. 31 Let them give thanks for the Lord steadfast love, for God’s wonderful works to humankind. 32 Let them extol the Lord in the congregation of the people, and praise God in the assembly of the elders. R: Wellspring source of life eternal, drench our dryness make us whole. GLORIA PATRI #594 Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS: Old Testament Lesson: Jonah 1 Gospel Lesson: Mark 4:35-41 SERMON: WE RESPOND IN FAITH HYMN: 728 The storm is strong 1. The storm is strong; we face the wind. The water rises; waves crash in. Where are we now? Where will we be? There is no mercy on this sea. 2. But you, Christ, you are with us here. We turn to you in all our fear. The single word you say is 'peace' and wind and waves and storm all cease. 3. Who can you be? What power your say that even winds and sea obey? Remove our fear of death and harm. Give us your faith and still our storm. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERING OFFERTORY DUET Jesus, Saviour, Pilot Me
Betty Kolodziej and Graham Fast 1. Jesus, Saviour, pilot me Over life's tempestuous sea; Unknown waves before me roll, Hiding rock and treacherous shoal. Chart and compass came from Thee. Jesus, Saviour, pilot me. 2. As a mother stills her child, Thou canst hush the ocean wild; Boisterous waves obey Thy will When Thou sayest to them, "Be still!" Wondrous Sovereign of the sea, Jesus, Saviour, pilot me. 3. When at last I near the shore, And the fearful breakers roar 'Twixt me and the peaceful rest, Then, while leaning on Thy breast, May I hear Thee say to me, "Fear not, I will pilot Thee." DOXOLOGY #830 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. OFFERTORY PRAYER We take Christ’s Love To The World
HYMN: 753 You walk along our shoreline 1. You walk along our shoreline where land meets unknown sea. We hear your voice of power, 'Now come and follow me. And if you still will follow through storm and wave and shoal, then I will make you fishers, but of the human soul.' 2. You call us, Christ, to gather the people of the earth. We cannot fish for only those lives we think have worth. We spread your net of gospel across the water's face, our boat a common shelter for all found by your grace. 3. We cast our net, O Jesus; we cry the kingdom's name; we work for love and justice; we learn to hope through pain. You call us, Lord, to gather God's daughters and God's sons, to let your judgement heal us so that all may be one. BENEDICTION and CHORAL AMEN POSTLUDE III: ‘ And I will pour out my Spirit upon all
