Welcome to WAICANNEWS Summer Edition 2020 Wairarapa Cancer Society From the Centre Manager The year ends with thankfulness that we enter into the new year having survived Covid-19 in 2020,and with high hopes for a vaccine programme that will reduce its effect even further. Imagine what a year its been for those with cancer having to consider covid-19 as well. We hope that our interven- tions and support have made that impact a little less stressful. We have many people in our organization to thank this year. People who have gone the extra mile to try and keep cancer treatment available and accessible, including getting patients out of the Wairarapa to their treatment and ap- pointments. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our Volunteers. The drivers have completed nearly 500 trips this year despite Covid-19. Cancer Society Nurses have supported 277 patients on their cancer treatment journey with nearly 50 individuals benefitting from other support such as Counselling with Trudi, and mindfulness / relaxation or massage with Bobbie Joe and/or our other massage partners, Lynette and Kerry .We thank Linda and Steve Oldfield at Shape Shop for continuing to sustain our partnership for post treatment rehab. Some of you in treatment met Grant who delivered you firewood; others met one of our Visitors or joined Margaret in walking group. Those who wanted to take a walk in the garden at Margaret Chittick House have seen how the gardening team have converted the overgrown garden into a calm place to sit, and Ewart assists ably with the Shade loan scheme. Chemotherapy patients on a Wednesday at Wairarapa DHB are served morning tea by one of our 5 hostesses. Many of our group /support facilitators are volunteers too and give their time skills and knowledge to help. None of this plethora of services can happen without our Volunteers. The end of a year brings sadness for some, but a time to reflect and joy for others as the festive season approaches. Be kind to yourselves, Kia Kaha Jacinta Buchanan Centre Manager Pictured (below) is our Chairperson Keith Hunt presenting an Appreciation Award to Peter Coom on International Volunteers Day. Health Promotion News SLIP on sun protective clothing – Wear items of clothes that offer good protection from the sun such as long-sleeved tops and lightweight trousers. For children especially if they are swimming, ensure they wear either a wet suit or a rash shirt/suit rather than T-shirts in the water. SLOP on sunscreen – Slop on SPF30+ broad-spectrum and water-resistant sunscreen. Apply over all areas of exposed skin 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or more regularly if you have been swimming or sweating. Check the expiry date on your sunscreen. If it’s out of date, then throw it away. Keep your sunscreen handy such as in your beach, sport, or swim bag. SLAP on a hat – Choose a hat such as a legionnaire, broad brimmed or bucket hat to provide protection for your face, back of the neck, eyes and ears – the most com- mon areas affected by skin cancer. For children make sure they have a wide brimmed or bucket style hat. WRAP on some sunglasses – Wear close fitting wraparound sunglasses to protect the sensitive skin and eye area. SEEK some shade – Slip into shade when UV levels are highest between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Encourage children to play in the shade where appropriate. uv2day is a smartphone app to let you know when sun pro- tection is needed. This is recommended from September to April when the UV index is 3 or above even on cooler, cloudy days. The uv2day app calculates the UV Index for any time of day and is especially helpful for those who enjoy outdoor activities and want to avoid over-exposure to UV radiation which can in- crease the skin cancer risk. Download the free uv2day app from either Google Play or the App Store The UV index can also be found at www.niwa.co.nz/UV-forecasts As summer is here, it’s time to sit outside and enjoy outdoor dining, and what better way to enjoy this is by dining at venues that are com- mitted to being 100% smoke and vape free, which makes for a more pleasant dining experience.
