BOURNE GRAMMAR SCHOOL BULLETIN Week ending Friday 15 February 2019 From Jonathan Maddox, Headteacher NEW HEAD STUDENTS APPOINTED Following a rigorous selection process, the initial stages of which were led by the outgoing Head Students, a new Head Student Team has been appointed. The new team has a hard act to follow as it follows one of the strongest, hardest-working and most impactful teams that I can recall. Our congratulations and very best wishes to the new team. The new team are photographed below; unfortunately Bertie is unwell today and therefore is omitted from the photograph. HEAD BOY HEAD GIRL Ahmed Sharaf Lauren Gapper DEPUTY HEAD STUDENTS Bertie Cliffe Mimi Chifamba Jonathan Gutteridge Izzy Kaufman YEAR 12 VISIT THE CRANEDALE CENTRE - Report by Aashobanaa Valli and Yasmin Hornsby (Year 12) On Sunday 3 February, Year 12 Biologists and Environmental Scientists visited the Cranedale Centre in North Yorkshire for three days to explore the biodiversity of the surrounding area. After arriving, we were assigned our rooms and given a mini tour of the centre, followed by a three-course dinner. But it wasn’t time for bed yet. Venturing out into the snow-filled woods, we took some Longworth traps with us, hoping to catch some different species of mice. These traps were humane so the animals were not harmed. !1
Monday began with checking our traps. Unfortunately our group was unsuccessful, but another group found a wood-mouse which was eagerly photographed by Mr Perez. After putting all five layers on (or eleven for some), we headed towards the river in wellies and waterproofs to investigate the biodiversity in a freshwater ecosystem. This mainly involved wading through rivers and trying not to fill our boots with water. The main species we found were freshwater shrimp. For the first time in years, Mr Stainton managed to not fall into the river! Our final day consisted of layering up once again, but this time we went to Filey Beach to conduct a transect investigation. This was interesting as we were able to observe and see a variety of species. Our journey ended with our return to the Centre to collect our bags and head home, after a tiring but engaging three days. YEAR 13 MEDIA STUDENTS ATTEND THE BAFTAs RED CARPET Report by Joshua Martin-Jones and Jessica Tooth (Year 13) Waking up at 03:30 to catch a coach down to London was never going to be fun, but as Media students and extremely avid film fans, Josh and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to gain access to the red carpet of the 72nd British Academy Film Awards last Sunday, 10 February. We collected our numbered wristbands at 10:00, an activity that was somewhat akin to The Hunger Games, and filed onto the red carpet around three hours before it all kicked off at 5pm. Among the actors and celebrities that graced the carpet, and we were lucky enough to catch sight of, were Batman himself, Christian Bale (leading actor nominee for Vice), Suicide Squad and I, Tonya star Margot Robbie (supporting actress nominee for Mary Queen of Scots), Taron Egerton (agent Eggsy Unwin from the Kingsman franchise and star of upcoming Elton John biopic Rocketman), Adam Driver (Star Wars villain Kylo Ren and supporting actor nominee for BlacKkKlansman) and the talented Octavia Spencer (executive producer of Green Book, which held 4 nominations and snatched up the supporting actor award thanks to Mahershala Ali). Not only did Josh and I have the opportunity to see the stars in the flesh, we were also incredibly lucky to be able to meet and speak to a few celebrities we both greatly admire. Josh and I with Olivia Colman - rightful winner Papped with the lovely Bradley Cooper, who of the leading actress award for her role as received nominations for both Best Director Queen Anne in The Favourite, a film which and Lead Actor for the musical drama A Star also scored the BAFTAs for Costume Design, Is Born, which won the award for Best Original Make Up & Hair, Production Design, Original Music.
