A museum collection 360 million years in the making… This year we are excited to be hosting Hoards: the hidden history of ancient Britain, a British Museum and Salisbury Museum Partnership Exhibition. Alongside the exhibition we’ll have an exciting programme of events and other activities, thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, look out for more details nearer the time. This spring our BM125 project artists will be creating and performing new works inspired by our collections, at the museum and in the landscape. Look out for modern mermaids, singing minerals and more. There will be a range of activities that you can join in with, thanks to funding from Arts Council England. As we look forward to the re-opening of the Crescent as a spa hotel and visitor experience, our summer exhibition will focus on this iconic Buxton building with art works and artefacts from our collection. Our eighteenth-century watercolours and sketches are now available online thanks to funding from the Paul Mellon Centre for British Art. Browse images from our collection and other organisations at www.depictingderbyshire.uk. We’d like to thank all of our funders, partners, volunteers and visitors for their continued support. We’re continuing to add to our app at www.wondersofthepeak.org.uk. Here you can explore the collection wherever you are and visit our online shop. Circular outlines define space and circular spaces gain significance, particularly when seen in the context of the stone circles in Derbyshire and North East Germany that have provided source material for many of the works displayed. Engaging with these circles for centuries links us both historically and internationally. © Sue Lewis-Blake

They’ll also be a ‘pirate’ studio including items of memorabilia, equipment and original recordings. We’ll also be displaying hoards from Derbyshire and the Peak District including additional material from Beeston Tor.
The Crescent: A Celebration Saturday 8 June to Sunday 1 September 2019 The Crescent was the fashionable centre of Georgian Buxton – a fine hotel where visitors could take the waters and dance the night away. This exhibition celebrates the re- development of the Crescent by showcasing fascinating pictures from its past. © Buxton Museum and Art Gallery Derbyshire Open Art Exhibition Saturday 6 July to Friday 13 September 2019 Preview: Friday 5 July, 6.30pm Since 1982 the Derbyshire Open has attracted amateur and professional artists of all ages competing for a range of prizes and a place in the museum collection. Entry details are available online. © Ross Sallaway Limescape – The Shrouded Aesthetic Steve Gresty Saturday 7 September to Saturday 16 November 2019 Meet the Artist: Saturday 28 September, 2pm– 4pm and Saturday 26 October 2pm–4pm Captured over a 3 year period, this study considers how limestone quarrying – a process which seeks to meet our unrelenting desire for the comforts and conveniences of consumer items – is concealed both from public view and under the veil of the dust it creates. Carboniferous limestone contributes to the natural beauty of areas within the Peak District National Park. This exhibition however draws attention away from the obvious picturesque countryside and reveals the obscure and surreal ‘landscapes’ of the hidden worlds that are the quarry environments. © Steve Gresty
The Chrome Hill Project Brian Holdcroft and Tony Wild Saturday 21 September to Saturday 23 November 2019 Preview: Saturday 21 September, 2–4pm Meet the Artists: Saturday 5 October, 2–4pm Two Artists, two interpretations, one unique place. The scale-like spine of Chrome Hill and Park House Hill, known as the Dragons back, singles out this areas uniqueness. It sits amongst the range of hills that form a natural amphitheatre where light and sound move in and through the escarpment. This is where local artists Tony Wild and Brian Holdcroft have situated themselves. This exhibition is a culmination of a body of work over a twelve month period. © Brian Holdcroft Like It. Lump It. We Are All Connected Beth Barlow Saturday 23 November 2019 to Saturday 1 February 2020 Preview: Saturday 23 November, 2–4pm ‘Like It. Lump It. We Are All Connected’ is a conceptual art and socially engaged art work initiated and led by artist Beth Barlow. Since 2017 Beth has been working with various communities to crochet the news. The resulting large scale installation provides an overview of news stories and how they are linked. Whilst we may be © Steve Jenner presented with distinct stories, the project has tested the idea that every thing or incident is linked to everything else. The work has been touring the North West and growing at each step. Those who see the work most commonly describe it as ‘thought © Beth Barlow provoking’ Artwork 2019 Buxton Community School and St Thomas More Catholic School Saturday 30 November 2019 to Saturday 1 February 2020 Preview: Friday 29 November, 6.30pm Staff and students from two Buxton secondary schools present the very best work from their GCSE and A-Level art examination courses in this popular annual show.
