Zagreb got its start as two medieval fortress towns atop hills overlooking the Sava River, and was reborn in the Baroque period as center of business, perfectly located on routes connecting Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea. These days, Zagreb is the heart of contemporary Croatia’s culture, art, sports and academics, but its history is not forgotten. Venue and Accommodation UNION-IP’s ExCo meeting will take place in "Esplanade" (https://www.esplanade.hr/), Zagreb's iconic hotel which was opened in 1925 as a refuge for passengers from the Orient Express. Restaurants - Welcome reception/dinner on 2 May 2019 - Restaurant ”Gallo”, Hebrangova 34, http://www.gallo.hr Fresh seafood and homemade pasta are the specialities of this elegant restaurant located in a quiet courtyard, just a few minutes walk from “Esplanade”. The restaurant offers a choice of some 70 Croatian and global wines. It is widely considered to be one of the best restaurants in Zagreb. 3
- Galla dinner on 3 May 2019 - Restaurant ”Emerald Ballroom”, ”Esplanade" hotel With its soaring, dome-shaped roof and ornate feature windows, Emerald Ballroom is the most spectacular events space in Zagreb. Excursions - Excursion for accompanying persons on 3 May 2019 - TRAKOŠĆAN – KRAPINA - KUMROVEC The Croatian Zagorje is located in the northwestern part of Croatia, near Zagreb, and is filled with beautiful picturesque hills, woods, and small rivers. This tour will take participants to the cultural monuments and beautiful destinations of Zagorje, starting with Trakošćan and ending in Kumrovec. Trakošćan The majestic Trakošćan Castle from the 13th century was established as a museum in 1953 and has displays of a picture gallery, weapon collection, and plenty of beautiful antique furniture. Today, the castle is owned by the Republic of Croatia and is protected as a historical entity. 4
Krapina Krapina Neanderthal Museum is located near the excavation site Hušnjakovo, where in 1899 the world’s largest collection of Neanderthals fossil bones was found. More than 900 fossil bones of Neanderthals and numerous fossil remains of Pleistocene animals (woolly rhinoceros, cave bear, wolf, elk, giant deer and many other) were found in the cave sandstone deposits. Over a thousand pieces of stone tools witness to the material culture of Krapina Neanderthals. The site dates back to 125 000 BC and it is one of the most significant paleoanthropological localities worldwide. The permanent exhibition of the Krapina Neanderthal Museum shows the complex story of the origin of life on Earth and human evolution in 18 different thematic units.The world’s largest diorama of Neanderthal man is the highlight of the museum display. The permanent exhibition contains reconstructions, original fossils and multimedia installations. Visitors from all over the world are attracted by the importance of the site and its impact on comprehension of European prehistory. The main aim of the Krapina Neanderthal Museum is to communicate the world most famous Neanderthal discovery site to European audiences in order to encourage learning and curiosity about human evolution in Europe. Lunch at restaurant „Gresna Gorica“ “Gresna Gorica” is a rustic eatery with countryside views and well-prepared traditional Zagorje meals. 5
Kumrovec Kumrovec is a small and popular village in Croatia which dates all the way back to 1463. It’s surrounded by the ruins of Cesar grad, and has a museum in the center, Old Village (Staro Selo), which is a significant ethnical and cultural point of Kumrovec. You can find the birthplace of Josip Broz Tito, the leader of Yugoslavia after WWII, his bronze statue, and the elementary school, which he attended. Kumrovec has preserved original rural homes from the 19th and 20th century and it is one of a kind open-air museum. In the village you can find antique homes, known as 'hize', which represent the history of the ancestors. Each house has its own story has a protected cultural heritage. Kumrovec is a little village that offers many interesting things to see. - Excursion for delegates and accompanying persons on 4 May 2019 – ZAGREB This tour will introduce participants to the most popular destinations of Zagreb’s down and upper- town, starting with one of the most famous monuments that contribute to Zagreb’s rich history, the Zagreb Cathedral. Zagreb Cathedral It towers 105 meters over Zagreb’s Upper Town and is one of the city’s top attractions. Built in the 11th century, the magnificent cathedral is Croatia’s tallest structure and largest place of worship, notable for its striking Neo-Gothic design. The reconstruction of the cathedral began in 1987 due to an earthquake and has been ongoing ever since. 6
Atelier Meštrović Continuation of the walking tour to Upper town, to the Atelier Meštrović, where the works of one of the most famous Croatian artist and sculptor lays. Ivan Meštrović lived in this house with his family from the years of 1920’s to 1942, and completed most of his works in this house including a monument displayed in Chicago, The Indians. Croatian Museum of Naive Art Interpret the colorful work of naive artists from the 20th century at the Croatian Museum of Naive Art. The museum consists of the works of over 1,900 pieces, mainly created by Croatians, with a few other international well-known artists. Lunch at restaurant “Vinodol” Take a break and indulge in a delicious lunch at Vinodol restaurant, located in the heart of downtown Zagreb. They prepare their meals according to traditional recipes with a modern approach, which enables them to provide their customers with a tasty, traditional and Mediterranean cuisine (www.vinodol-zg.hr). 7
