Grace Lutheran Church Fifth Sunday after Epiphany February 7, 2021— 8:30 Worship Today’s gospel portrays Christ as the healer of human sickness. Yet even when he does not cure every illness, he still brings wholeness. He calls us to hold on in faith, sensing his presence and seeking his purpose even in the midst of illness. All are welcome to receive Holy Communion as we celebrate the presence of Jesus among us. Congregation responses in Bold. *Those who are able, please stand. We Gather to Praise PRELUDE Meditation Cesar Franck WELCOME/GREET ONE ANOTHER CALL TO WORSHIP We gather to worship God who alone can heal us and make us whole. Open our hearts, Lord, that you may transform our lives with your healing touch. We gather to serve God, who through us would heal and make whole a wounded creation. Open our lives, Lord, that you may use us in your holy and saving purposes. GATHERING HYMN 2
GREETING The grace of Jesus Christ, the mercy of the Holy One, and the Spirit of the living God is with us all. SONG OF PRAISE PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty and ever-living God, with mercy you look upon our weaknesses. Stretch out your wondrous hand to protect us from danger and restore us to health, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 3
We hear the Words of Light READING Isaiah 40:25-31 Listen to a reading from Isaiah. 25To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. 27Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God”? 28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. (NRSV) We give thanks for the Word of God. Word of Light. MESSAGE FOR THE CHILD IN US ALL *VERSE 4
*GOOD NEWS Mark 1:29-39 We give glory for the Good news from Mark. 29As soon as Jesus and the disciples left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once.31He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. 32That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. 33And the whole city was gathered around the door. 34And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. 36And Simon and his companions hunted for him.37When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” 38He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.”39And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. (NRSV) We give praise for the good news of the Lord. MESSAGE Pastor Dan Kahl HYMN OF THE DAY 5
We SHARe GOD’S LOVe *PRAYERS God of healing, you have graced the Church with wise leaders. Whether we are in the wilderness or the Promised Land, grant us the humility also to be faithful to your teachings. You, God, are stronger than all the world’s powers, yet we are quick to think that our power is stronger. Show us anew that you are indeed mightier, so that we can spread hope to everyone. We find magnificent your creation. Bless the people of this nation and throughout the world. Unite us all in efforts to take better care of your creation, remembering that we humans are a part of it. What happens to creation happens to us. Many people are less fortunate. They seem confused, lost, and in search of a center. Take us by the hand and show us how to help such people without being condescending. Lead us away from being judgmental. God of healing, you touch us with your compassion. Heal and comfort...and everyone in need we mention in our hearts. Let us become your hands to ease suffering. In the name of Christ we present these prayers to you, thankful for your responses. Amen.
