31st January 2021 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Waitangi Day The Waitangi Day Mass will be held next Saturday 6 February at 9.15am at St Mary’s Church. I hope that many parishioners will come and pray for Aotearoa New Zealand as we acknowledge and celebrate the founding document of our nation. Back to School The holiday season is at an end with students returning to school in the coming week. There are a number of significant liturgical events such as ‘Commissioning Masses’ and ‘powhiri’ which will be taking place over the next couple of weeks. I hope that parishioners will join the parents of students and staff in praying for the success of our schools and students in 2021. There are also a number of new families who have enrolled their children at our Catholic schools and are new parishioners. Some have come from outside Napier and do not know many people in the city. Please extend a warm welcome to these families as they settle into the life of the Catholic Parish of Napier. Safeguarding Workshop Matthew Balm, the Safeguarding Officer for the Diocese, is coming on Thursday 11 February at 6pm in the St Mary’s Centre to present a short workshop on safeguarding practices for parishioners involved in ministries in our Parish. This is of particular interest to those who are involved in ministries such as children’s liturgy, special Ministers of the Eucharist, and those who engaged in visitation to the sick. Any parishioner is welcome to attend. Please register your attendance by contacting the Parish Office. It will take just over an hour. COVID-19 Liturgical Guidelines The Diocese of Palmerston North has advised us that we need to continue our vigilance regarding the Ministry of Health guidelines at Alert Level 1. These are: no physical contact at the Sign of Peace Holy Communion under one kind only Holy Communion on the hand only Holy Water is to be removed from vessels at the Church door The priest will not be inviting parishioners to exchange a ‘Sign of Peace’ at Mass and there will be no Holy Water in the fonts at the entrance to Churches.
