Meet the 2018 Bathurst Youth Arts Award finalists Anna McPhail - annual winner I grew in my interest of music in the Blue Mountains area and have been learning piano from an early age. My family moved to Bathurst in 2017 in order to take up formal lessons at the Mitchell Conservatorium with Elena Day-Hakker and I most recently completed my Certificate of Performance exam in August. Through a year of invaluable tuition from Ms Day Hakker my result came with High Distinction and I am very grateful for the richness of my tuition which has afforded me opportunities to further my goal in sharing beautiful music with many. Bathurst is a field of plains that shows support for new talented Australian children and I am grateful to be one of them. Hamish McIntyre I am 18 years of age and currently studying Grade 8 on the flute and for my ATCL on the clarinet. I love the arts in Bathurst and the Conservatorium offers a wide range of performance opportunities from student performances to accompanying visiting soloists. I loved the opportunity of performing with Jane Rutter in a Conservatorium flute choir a few years ago and also the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra, accompanying the well renowned pianist Gil Sullivan. Bathurst is lucky to have a vibrant music community – I have enjoyed being involved with Conservatorium flute ensembles, community based bands, Anzac Day parade marching bands, Christmas on Keppel performances and Bathurst City Council’s Carols by Candlelight. Mia Ryan My name is Mia Ryan and I am 15 years old and a dancer at Denison College Kelso High Campus. I have trained in all areas of dance but my passion is Contemporary Dance. This year I have been involved with the NSW Arts Unit and was chosen to film a documentary here in Bathurst on my journey as a country dancer being part of a student composition and choreography with Paul Rissman, Animatuer for the London Symphony Orchestra to reimagine Profofiev’s Romeo & Juliet. I have been fortunate enough to work this year with the UK based Michael Clarke Dance Company and to now be accepted as 1 of 25 people to continue by studies in a Pre Professional Course and Camp with Dance Editorial in 2019. My passion for dance has me training and travelling weekly to Sydney where I bring back to Bathurst my knowledge to share with school and fellow dancers. The arts in the Bathurst region, is an important part of my journey, learning and creating from other art forms and with fellow artists.
Pavement Chalk Art Bathurst Arts Council was part of a Winter wonderland playground during Bathurst’s Winter Festival when it hosted the Pavement Chalk Art project. This event proved to be very popular with many children and following its success, Bathurst Arts Council once again hosted the same event at Bathurst’s Remembrance Day Commemoration on 11th November where canvasses were also provided for visitors to write or draw their thoughts on what Remembrance Day meant to them. These canvasses are on display at the RSL club in Bathurst.

2019 memberships now due Your membership: Supporting the Arts Bathurst Arts Council’s mission statement is: ‘Supporting the Arts’, and that is our main priority - we’re continuing this in 2019. We’ve found that one of the best ways we can support the arts is through small amounts of funding and sponsorship to local activities, and through programs like the Youth Arts Awards. In the recent past Bathurst Arts Council has supported: • Coordinating, and co-funding with 2BS, the Youth Arts Awards • Prizes at The Bathurst Eisteddfod • Bathsy200 Stencil Art Project • The award winning Peoplescape - People in Time Bathurst200 project We’ll also continue to support the arts through our weekly column in the Western Advocate and fortnightly column in Bathurst City Life. Fund-raising through our activities and membership subscriptions helps us to offer this support to the Arts in the Bathurst region. Our two main sources of income are our annual membership fees and the annual Brucedale Twilight Concert & Picnic. Your support of the Arts Council and the Brucedale concert in turn supports the arts in Bathurst. If you’re not a member of Bathurst Arts Council or your membership has lapsed we encourage you to rejoin. Your support is valued by the Arts Council and by the artists we support.
