Issue 1 - Term 1 - 28th February, 2019 Principal's Panui He kākano i ruia mai Rangiatea. The seed will not be lost. Principal’s Panui Kia Ora whanau. Welcome to the first newsletter for 2019. A regular morning sight for me this year as I arrive at school is seeing our touch rugby squads training on the school fields. It is great seeing a group of our young sportsmen and woman applying and committing themselves to a rigorous training programme as they strive to build their skills. It is all about involvement and personal accountability. The touch players are but one example of this but they are the first one I see on many mornings. Over the last week or so I have seen our learners eagerly sign up and commit themselves to summer sports teams, music tuition, study groups and community service initiatives. The result of this involvement and commitment can be observed in our top Futsal team. Three years ago, when this sport was introduced by Mr Nichol there was a certain amount of raw talent available but despite Mr Nichol’s enthusiasm the results were not always that exciting. A couple of seasons of training, commitment and engagement plus training hard and listening to their coach and this team is now in the Premier Christchurch competition and drew they first game last week against St Andrews. They are looking forward to going to the national tournament in Wellington with confidence that they will perform well. Great things come from perseverance and dedication. Great things come from listening, reflecting and striving to improve and this approach can easily be transferred to academic studies. The brain is a muscle and its gym is the classroom, it needs to be trained and exercised the same as any other muscle. In the same way that an athlete improves through practice and determination so does academic progress result from continued application, meeting deadlines, persevering with difficult work etc. I was working with a staff member a few days ago looking through the first drafts of some work from all year levels that had been submitted for checking. It was so pleasing to see how well these learners had listened and applied their knowledge to produce very impressive work. So my first message to learners is to emphasize the importance of involvement as a key first step to success. Involvement in sport, studies, community activities and cultural experiences. This involvement needs to be paired with engagement and determination but will result in genuine progress and development. Rolleston College - (03) 595 2490 - admin@rollestoncollege.nz
R2L At Rolleston College-Ready to Learn Purpose Statement: The purpose of Positive Behaviour for Learning-School Wide (referred to as Ready to Learn at Rolleston College) is to ensure the Rolleston Spirit is flourishing within our school. What is Positive Behaviour for Learning? Positive Behaviour for Learning: School-wide (PB4L) is a framework used by schools to develop initiatives that “support students to improve their behaviour, resilience and wellbeing. PB4L came out of the Taumata Whanonga behaviour summit in 2009. The summit recommended that the Ministry of Education look internationally for successful initiatives with a strong research and evidence base. These initiatives were then adapted to fit the culturally responsive context of New Zealand. (PB4L Overview 2015). In November 2016, 100% of staff at Rolleston College voted to adopt the PB4L framework. The staff have a strong belief that learners need to be Ready to Learn and Ready to Flourish. If a learner performs poorly in a learning task we teach them what steps to take next, if they struggle at a particular sports skill, we teach them how to improve, if they can not play a musical instrument we teach them how to play, yet traditionally, if they behave differently to what we expect… we punish them. PB4L aims to use teaching behaviour as a tool for improving behaviour. R2L Expectations Be on time to class (be seated in class before the music stops) Bring Device (fully charged at the start of the day) to class. Bring pen, pencil and paper to every class. Breaktimes are all OUTSIDE (instructions for a ‘wet break’ will be given on the day). Rolleston College - (03) 595 2490 - admin@rollestoncollege.nz

Celebrating Learners Congratulations to Isla Holland for her poem titled "New School", which has been published in the Summer 2019 issue of Toi Toi Magazine!
New School by Isla Holland Heavy glass doors shift open Hesitantly, I shuffle inside Massive waves of noise take over I heave big gulps of breath Bangs and clutters fill the busy hallway Laughing and chatting too So much to handle Why am I here? The familiar smell of stationery Smothers the unfamiliarity of this place But not quite Anticipation floods my nervous system A group of indifferent-looking girls walk past I see neatly-written essays and assignments plastered on the tall white walls Enveloping the building with an aura of expectation Do I belong? Unknown faces stroll casually with their mates What is their story? Teachers strut past My future with them Yet to be decided How long until the end of the day? I feel butterflies in my stomach More and more enter the small tight space My stomach is about to explode Lips shiver Teeth chatter I’m not cold My school bag Tugs me toward the dirty floor Regaining my balance I continue my journey to an unknown destination My colourful map of the school Announces that I’m new here A paper with room number and teacher Guides me to their lair This will definitely get better Right?
New Staff Highlight Hi everyone, my name is Mr Hunter and I'm one of the new teachers here at Rolleston College. I teach Social Sciences with a particular focus on History, whist also being the Ako coach of Koanga one. I'm a big fan of adventures, eating good food, playing some good games and taking naps after long days at school. I'm excited to be a part of the Rolleston College Whanua and look forward to meeting you all this year! Olivia Xiang Mandarin Language Assistant I am a native mandarin speaker and come from China. When I was in university, I majored in E-C/C-E translation and Applied Linguistics, which provided me with abundant chances to practice oral and written English. I have always been interested in being a teacher and I used to be a part- time Teaching Assistant during my university days. Before coming to Rolleston College, I received a comprehensive training on how to guide students to learn efficiently, how to teach mandarin, how to introduce Chinese culture and how to encourage students to bravely speak out. Through the one-year working here, I will spare no effort to look deeper into teaching based on respecting students’ individuality and interests.
Te Rito Harakeke New Staff My name is Kendra Horne and I will be teaching alongside Amy Howley in the Te Rito Harakeke satellite class based in Rolleston College this year. I have previously worked as a new entrant teacher so this is a big change for me, but I am extremely excited to be working in this amazing new environment and getting to know all the students here at Rolleston College in 2019. What’s up in TRH? This term in Te Rito Harakeke we have launched a new transition programme with our senior learners. Check out the awesome adventures they have been on so far this term!
