PATRIOT REPORT HERITAGE ACADEMY - COLUMBUS, MS June 3, 2019 CONGRATULATIONS, HA CLASS OF 2019!! Twenty-nine seniors walked across the stage at the Trotter Convention Center on Thursday, May 9th and became HA graduates and alumni! The Class of 2019 will be going in many different directions and pursuing many different dreams. They were offered over $ 2 million in scholarships that will help them as they continue their education at 14 different universities and colleges. GRADUATION HA School Board President Mrs. Robbie Upton presented diplomas to Valedictorian Haley Barker (left) and Salutatorian Kayla Thornton (right) and their classmates. Senior Walk Through A relatively new tradition at HA is for our Seniors to parade through the elementary hallways in their caps & gowns. The elementary students cheer for these role models and know that one day they will be taking these same steps! For the Seniors in the far right photo, it was a return to where they began school in Kindergarten or 1st grade. Senior Class Day An exciting part of Class Day is the presentation of 2019 Hall of Fame Named - congratulations to various awards and scholarships. Quin Smith-Tribble Gigi Fields, Moak Griffin, Lores Sharp and was presented with a “check" from the U.S. Army Clay Walters! Recruiter for her college tuition. FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENTS & MORE RETIREMENT RECOGNITION Mrs. Marilyn Fields and Mrs. Cindy Wamble were recently honored with a retirement reception. Mrs. Fields has taught music for 40+ years at HA and Mrs. Wamble has served as HA Elementary Principal for the past 7 years. Mrs. Wamble was also a teacher and administrator in the CMSD for many years. Early in her career she taught English at HA! In addition to teaching elementary music and private piano lessons, Mrs. Fields was also the director for Ceremonial First Pitch - In honor of her many memorable HA events retirement, Mrs. Cindy Wamble (center) was including num-erous high school invited to throw out the first pitch for our musicals, elemen-tary field days and baseball team's first home playoff game this more! Pictured is Nick Hairston (right). __________________________________________________________________ ANNUAL MEETING & SCHOOL BOARD NEWS At the conclusion of the school's (Columbus Educational Foundation) Annual Meeting in May, Headmaster Dr. Greg Carlyle thanked the school board members who have completed their terms. They are: Trip Hairston, Tommy Howard, Dr. Scott Jones and Louis Sharp. Dr. Carlyle presented a plaque in appreciation to members rotating off and also to Mrs. Robbie Upton who has completed her term as School Board President (see photo). "We truly appreciate the commitment and excellent work of HA's school board members," said Dr. Carlyle. Dr. Carlyle also welcomed new school board members Leah Ellis, Jason McCoy, Leslie Singley, and Paige Spears. Following the annual meeting, the new school board held its first meeting. HA ELEMENTARY NEWS 6th Grade Graduation & Awards Program Sixth grade graduation marks the end of our students' elementary years. Students were recognized for academic achievements, awarded diplomas and more. Shirley Miller ________________________ Senior Kindergarten Award Presented Mother's Day Tea: An Annual Tradition! This award is typically given to a student in 3rd - 5th grades who has shown perserverance in over- coming a challenge. It is given in memory of Mrs. Shirley Miller, a former teacher and guidance counselor at HA. Congratulations to this year's winner, 5th grader Brady Kimbrell! Patriot Report Page 4
HA STUDENTS IN THE NEWS: IN THE COMMUNITY & BEYOND Two Heritage Students Place in Top 10 in Miss Mississippi Outstanding Teen Pageant Evans Rhett Named 2nd Runner Up in this State Wide Competition HA was well represented recently when 35 beautiful, smart and talented young ladies from across the state competed in Vicksburg for the title of Miss Mississippi Outstanding Teen. Sophomore Evans Rhett was a preliminary talent winner with her vocal performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from “The Wizard of Oz." She was also a preliminary winner in the on-stage question. She was selected 2nd Runner Up! Eighth grader Hailey Pushis was the youngest contestant in the top ten. She was competing against high school sopho-mores and juniors. Hailey’s talent was an acro lyrical dance to “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston. Evans Rhett Hailey Pushis _______________________________________________________________ _ John Blanton, a HA Sophomore, takes aim at the National Junior Olympic Championships in Precision Air Rifle. This HA Sophomore McKenzie Rhett competition is 10 meter range, standing position, with 60 shots was crowned Miss Junior Teen each day over two days of competition. John shot a personal Mississippi 2019! Congratulations HA Baseball Team! 2019 MAIS AAA BASEBALL STATE CHAMPIONS!!! First Baseball Championship in School History The 2019 Baseball Team has provided an exciting, history making season for HA as these Patriots claimed the District, North State and State Championship titles! It was a perfect combination of hard work, talent, and team effort that provided family, friends and other fans with a year to remember. In its final game of the season, the Patriots defeated Wayne Academy on the road to bring the title home! Congratulations to our players and coaches!! Patriot Report Page 6
HERITAGE TAKES MAIS ALL-SPORTS AWARD FOR 2ND CONSECUTIVE YEAR!! READ MORE HERE! HA TENNIS TEAMS: 2019 STATE CHAMPS! Congratulations to our HA Tennis Teams for winning 2019 state titles! Both the boys and the girls teams won Overall State Titles! Individual titles went to: Boys #2 Doubles: Jonathan Swartz and Rocky Marcel; Girls #2 Doubles: Kendall Kelly and Emily Howard; Girls #2 Singles: Elizabeth Nichols. We are so proud of these student athletes!! Proffitt Wins MAIS State Track Titles At the recent MAIS State Track Meet, Junior Reuben Proffitt tied for 1st place in the high jump at 6’. He also took 1st place in the triple jump with a jump of 43’5”. Wow! Congratulations, Reuben!! We are so proud of you!! (far left - Reuben pictured with Track Coach Tobias Smith; also photographed on the winner's block) 2019 Athletic Banquet Held Student athletes and sports teams were recognized for a great year with many awards and honors. Several special awards were presented, including: Lores Sharp, Sports Booster Scholarship Award; Moak Griffin, “Bo Simpson” Award; Lex Rogers, Sports Booster Scholarship Award; and Gigi Fields, “Yandell Harris” Award. HA 1994 State Championship Runner Up Baseball Team - several members of this awesome Patriot team returned to campus to throw out the ceremonial first pitch recently when the 2019 Patriots started their playoff run to win the 2019 title. It was great having these alumni (and many of their parents!) return to campus to encourage and cheer on our current team!
