19th MAY 2010 From Clive Pemberton, Headteacher. Like most schools, Wyedean has a School Council, consisting of students from each year group, which meets regularly to discuss all aspects of school life. The Council is an increasingly important group – it is the means by which all students in the school can ensure that their views are heard by staff. Black and White Day, Friday 21st May 2010. A development this year has been the introduction of the Forest Schools’ Council. This comprises student representatives from the six secondary schools in the Forest (Dene Magna, Heywood, Lakers, Newent, Whitecross and Wyedean). The Forest Schools’ Council has taken as one of its priorities road safety awareness and they are organising a Black and White Day in Forest Schools this Friday (May 21st). This will be a non-uniform day for all students in the six schools; students are encouraged to wear black and white instead of their normal school uniform. Students will not have to pay anything; the day is about raising awareness rather than raising funds. I hope you will encourage your sons and daughters to wear black and white on Friday. From Harry Ives, Student Council Chairman. The student voice is expanding, and as part of this we have managed to obtain a regular slot in the schools weekly newsletter. Every week I shall be writing to inform you all of recent developments and successes within the student voice. The past month has been a busy one, we have managed to strengthen the link between the Student Council and the various Year Councils by appointing a chairperson within each Year Council. The Chairperson will act as a link between the two student voice tiers by attending meetings of the Student Council to inform us of recent discussions within their respective Year Councils so that we can provide feedback, which has proved to be very successful. We have managed to secure our own section of the school website (currently under construction), within which the minutes and agendas of every Year Council meeting and Student Council meeting will be posted, together with membership lists and photographs of the students involved in each respective body. Opinion polls are also planned, which will help us to gauge student opinion on certain issues. We have also been discussing the prospect of introducing more school-branded clothing, as well as the creation of a debating club, and have joined the Forest Student Councils consortium. We have pledged our support to the Rotary Club, and have a non-uniform day planned to raise funds for their cause. The next Student Council meeting is scheduled for 27th May at 1:30 in P1. From Ms A Thomas, MFL Dept. Thank you to all those Year 10 French students who have signed up for the Paris trip next year. The second payment of £200 is now due. Please send it in to the Cash Office as soon as possible. Many thanks. As a reminder, the final payment is due on July 1st. From Mr Tett, 2i/c English. Year 11 English Literature examination: Tuesday, 25 May, 2010 Year 11 students have their final English Literature examination on Tuesday, 25 May. This examination doesn’t allow students to take their books in with them. However, it is very important that students return their books to their English teacher as soon as possible after the examination, preferably before study leave commences (Thursday 27 May). Failure to return the allocated books will result in being billed for the cost of new ones. Please encourage students to return their books after the examination. Thank you.
19th MAY 2010 From PE Department: Year 10 County Cricket Cup Match. The Year 10 cricket side made the long journey to Tewkesbury and came away with a 2 run win. Wyedean won the toss and elected to bat and openers Hudson and Jones made an excellent start putting on 73 for the first wicket. Jones was then run out for 15 trying to up the run rate, this allowed the middle order to come in and play their shots. Jake and Aaron Parson both came in and dispatched the ball to all parts of the ground both making a quick fire 18 each. Hudson at the other end kept the board ticking and carried his bat for an excellent innings of 64 n.o. Wyedean finished their innings on 120 off the allotted 20 overs. The Tewkesbury openers set about the target well and put on 67 for the first wicket. A clever bowling change was made and Jack Farrant claimed the first couple of wickets. This helped stifle the run rate and Hudson, Parsons and Weaterton all bowled well picking up wickets on the way. The final over was bowled by Weaterton with Tewkesbury only needing 9 runs. The first four balls went for three runs, then the Tewkesbury batmen hit a four leaving only 2 runs needed off the last ball. Wyedean ran the batsmen out to win by 2 runs. Well done boys and good luck in the next round. Year 7 Cricket, Lydney 12th May Year 7 played cricket at Lydney against Lakers, Heywood, Whitecross and Newent. Wyedean won two and lost two. All players played fantastic! We have been busy counting them and currently have about 17,000. That is an amazing amount which equates to 1,700 trolleys full of shopping: one and a half trolleys for every family in Wyedean. When you break the figures down like this, you realise that the Wyedean community probably did a lot more shopping at Tesco during the 10 weeks of the promotion. So, we’re hoping that you still have a stack of vouchers lying around at home and in the bottom of bags and we’d like to respectfully ask if you could donate them to us to help us achieve our target of 30,000. With many thanks in anticipation of your generosity. Watch this space to see what we end up ordering in late June.
