The Chronicle February 2021 St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Bellville, Texas 77418 My journey from Austin this morning led me to drive into a spectacular sunrise. I first recognized it by a slow lightening of the eastern sky. And then, at just the right time, the bright sliver of light broke triumphantly over the horizon. Something about the way the clouds interacted with the emerging light made it seem like the rays of sun were lasers shooting forth to force a reluctant retreat of the darkness. I love sunrises. No matter how many I see, the next one seems more amazing than the last. They remind me of the grace of fresh starts and the hope of new births. They infuse life into tired and weary lives. I think all of us are a little weary. A year ago, “pandemic” was just another word. It de- scribed terrible diseases of the past. Masks were something only medical professionals used. The only ones concerned with social distancing were chaperones at a high school prom. Coming to church meant we got in our vehicles and came to church. And zoom was just a word to describe the sound cars make. The last year has brought so much uninvited change. Covid has infected not only our physical bodies, but has penetrated to the heart of our existence. We now have to consider the risk of any social interaction. We don’t see each other’s faces. All of us feel a longing for a return to “normal.” So, let us all take a moment and think of the glory of a sunrise. Darkness is always tempo- rary because it cannot stand against light. Sometimes we struggle to see God’s hand in the darkness. But the dawn comes as we recognize and accept God’s presence and love all around us. For me, this Sunday is a long-awaited sunrise. For the last years God has faithfully worked in my life to prune and prepare me to be your rector. A few years ago I would not have dreamed I would once again be a minister. Times of darkness and disappointment are an inevitable part of the journey through the maze of call, clarification, training, and ordination. But now, I am so excited to walk with you through the celebrations and struggles that lay ahead. My heart is filled with gratitude for you and your call to me. I can’t wait to see all that God is going to do. God is always present. Fr. John

Dear St. Mary’s Family, I hope your 2021 is off to a wonderful start. We welcomed students back to school after the Christmas break on January 6. I think we all enjoyed the time off and spending time with family, but were ready to get back to school too. We have been busy at the school this past month getting ready for registration for the 2021-2022 school year. I receive calls inquiring about registration most days and gave five tours last week. If you know anyone who is interested in en- rolling, please have them give me a call. Registration dates for 2021-2022 are as follows: Mon., Feb 22 - Church families receive their packets Thurs., Feb 25 - Current families will receive their packets Tues., Mar. 2 - Kindergarten registration at 5:30 p.m. Thurs., Mar. 4 - Former families and Alumni registration at 5:30 p.m. Mon., Mar. 8 - Open Enrollment for new families at 5:30 p.m. Besides the registration activities in February, our kindergarteners are going on a walking field trip in Bellville to learn about community helpers. February 8 is the 100th day of school, on February 11, we’ll celebrate Valentine’s Day and Dr. Luekenga, a local dentist, will visit the school on February 25 to talk about good dental hygiene. Please save the date for the school’s annual fundraiser on March 27. Your continued prayers and support of the day school are much appreciated. Lori Collins Sunday School News We would like to continue to collect food for the O'Bryant Backpack Buddies. Here is the list of the foods they are collecting: Ramen noodles or Marachun instant cup noodles Cereal Bars Fruit Cups Macaroni and Cheese cup or box Individual oatmeal packages (will divide box) Individual popcorn bags Applesauce cups Pudding cups Vienna sausages Individual packets of hot chocolate (will divide box) Please drop off at the church or leave in the box in the back of the church. We are so thankful to everyone that brought food during Advent. The leaders of this program were so very grateful to receive the food St. Mary's collected for them. Mary Ann
