Circus Arts Byron Bay Circus Programs for PDHPE & Performing Arts in Schools Circus skills are not only exceptional fun, but they provide an extremely unique and engaging method of physical education and activity to K-12 school-aged children and a way to be involved in a vibrant and in- teresting area of the community. Circus fulfils a wide variety of NSW PDHPE and Performing Arts Curriculum requirements and aligns well to government-recom- mended policies for establishing fundamental movement skills, fulfilling values, attitude and skills outcomes and encouraging a lifelong engagement with maintaining an active lifestyle. Children who engage in circus skills as part of their regular physical activity not only quickly improve their physical cardiovascular endurance and muscular fitness level, but circus has also been proven to stimulate intellectual development, promote better hand-eye coordination and concentration, encourage social engagement and boost creativity. Activities such as juggling have even been shown to increase white and grey brain matter and improve childrens’ academic performance! (1) Circus kids enjoy the added bonus of increased confidence, team work, self-awareness, controlled risk-taking, esteem-building and the opportunity to perform their skills using their individuality and inventiveness, which may also lead to career opportunities in the physical arts industry from a young age. -1-
Circus classes not only capture the attention of students who are naturally drawn to fitness activities and sports, but they very often encourage a higher level of participation from students who otherwise hesitate to engage in physical education, offering a viable alternative to regular sports. There are inviting options for students of all skill levels and physical abilities, including those with disabilities. Circus engages the body and mind in an enjoyable way, setting a foundation for life-long skills and fitness, thus making circus a true equal opportunity PDHPE option for school curriculums. In addition, by Circus Arts coaches providing professional instruction in these skills, schools do not need to retrain current Physical Education staff and involvement in the classes may offer professional value to school staff who participate. If participation is recurrent, students may even wish to develop shows to perform at school events or theatre productions, adding value to the performance arts skill set at your school. One circus class of one hour duration, once a week for the nine week term would fulfil 50% of the two hours a week of planned physical activity for school-aged children, as recommended for schools by the NSW Department of Education and Communities. Circus Arts Byron Bay offers a variety of stand-alone or full term experiences for all schools in the Northern Rivers area. “An outstanding venue offering a cross section of our students the 1.
