Emersons Green Primary School 21st May 2021 EGPS News Issue 27 Email: admin@egps.org.uk WEB: www.emersonsgreenprimary.co.uk Ensuring Safety When Out and About We are really pleased for children and their families, that the gradual loosening of lockdown restrictions means they have more opportunities to go outside and enjoy their local community. We also know that some of our pupils are old enough to go out by themselves, particularly as so much of Emersons Green is designed to reduce the risk of traffic incidents. However, I have had a number of parents talk to me about incidents that have happened in local parks, involving children in our school. The incidents happened on different days and appeared to involve different pupils. However, a common theme appears to be that children from our school, some accompanied by parents and some with friends, have been intimidated, threatened or even physically assaulted by older children. While I do not want to alarm you, this needs to be taken very seriously. I have been in contact with our local Police Community Support Officer, who will be visiting our school to talk to us about support they can offer for this. There are also a number of things you can do to help your child: Always make sure you know where your child is going and stay in constant contact with them. We advise that unaccompanied children need a mobile phone so they can contact you if needed. If your child is going out with friends, always check with the parents of those children if you can, to ensure you all know where they are going. Prepare your child for any potential incident by ensuring, if they become uncomfortable about a situation, they immediately leave, do not engage with whoever is making them feel uncomfortable and that they let an adult know straight away. Agree a safe place that your child (or a group of friends) can go to if they think they need help. This could be a family home of whichever child lives nearest, or whatever you agree. This is really important if someone gets hurt. If an incident occurs involving your child, then let us know. We can sometimes provide support if your child needs it or contact other schools if we identify where other children involved go to school. If you are very concerned about an incident, you should consider reporting it to the Police on 101. Our community support team are excellent—they will hold individuals to account for their behaviour if required and can also provide support or reassurance to victims. While it saddens me to have to write this in our newsletter, we all know as adults, from our own experiences of childhood, that, while there is a real joy which comes from independence, this has to be balanced by recognising, accepting and managing any risks. We want our pupils to be able to go out and safely enjoy their community and spend time with friends. If you ever need any support with this, then please let us know. I hope you have a lovely weekend! Karl Hemmings, Headteacher
