Wednesday 1st August, 2018 Newsletter #22 Term 3, Week 2 School Roll 326 Kia ora Parents, Whanau, and Caregivers, What a great start to the term we have had. Last week we enrolled 19 new students to our school. A very big welcome to our new families. It was certainly nice to have all of our children back after the break and to hear of their holiday fun. Our community is certainly growing. We would like to inform our community that Mr Stirling has decided to take some further adventures in life and he will be leaving us in Week 6 this term. Mr Stirling has been at our school for a number of years and we wish him the very best in his life choices and future. We will be farewelling Mr Stirling at the end of Week 5. Miss McGovern will be the new Hub Leader of Hub 3 and Mrs Inez Tucker will be teaching in Hub 2 . Reminder - Community Survey This will be coming out next week. Yes, it’s that time of year again when we are starting to think about and plan for 2019. A part of the planning process is review and the community survey provides an opportunity for you, our community, to share your thoughts on how we are doing as a school, including what we are doing well, and some ideas to help us be even better. One of our goals in the past few years has been to reduce the amount of paper we use as a school. Once again this year we are going to send out our survey online rather than a paper copy. The survey will be sent to your email address, much like the newsletter is, and should take about 10 minutes of your time. We would really appreciate you taking approx. 10 minutes when the survey hits your email box to complete the survey and helps us set the direction for our great school in 2019. The survey will be emailed in Week 3, please make sure the office has your correct email address. Grandparents Club This year we started a Grandparents Club on a Wednesday which has been very exciting. We have four grandparents who come into our school each week to participate in activities with our students. The key focus is oral language and building relationships with each other. This week some of our our students were able to work with play dough to be bakers and some boys also worked on lego design and build. A very big thank you to our grandparents for volunteering their time to be with us.
Teacher Strike Actions Update - FULL DAY STRIKE CONFIRMED Negotiations continue with the principals and teachers union and a decision has been made to strike for a full day. Further information will become available over the week. The strike action date is the 15th August. The school will be closed for instruction on this day. Therefore there will be no-one on site. Teachers across the country will also be addressing the wider community in a variety of ways on the 3rd of August. Why are teachers feeling this way? Teachers want to send a strong message to government that they want the best they can get for our tamariki by having more time to teach, more time to lead, additional needs to be supported appropriately in schools and turn around the teacher shortage that is at crisis level. We appreciate your support. Our littlest learners in Hub 1 have been a celebrating to the milestone of making 100 days of school. The children are working on a range of things to celebrate this occasion. Some families have been doing projects at home with a 100 focus on whatever they create. It has been exciting to view the many collaborate projects that the children are doing. Congratulations team on a successful start to your life and learning at Welcome Bay School and for making the amazing milestone of 100 days! If you are in the school go and check them out. KICK Start: Transition to school programme This programme is for both new parents and children starting at Welcome Bay School and runs for approximately seven weeks during the term . NEXT SESSION: Monday 6 August, 2018 @ 1:45pm FOCUS: Play Based Approaches If you are interested in attending please call the school office on 544 1113 and let us know you will be along so we can plan for numbers. Also, if you know someone who intends on enrolling at Welcome Bay School but does not get the newsletter please let them know, too. We look forward to seeing you!
