Why The iPad • There is a great deal of support available for the use of iPads in schools. The extensive teacher support includes educational apps readily accessed, blogs, online resources, many school contacts. • Students can use the personal organisation tools; notes, reminders and tasks can easily be kept in one spot, commented on and available anywhere. • Can hold electronic and interactive texts - (lighter school bags, access at both home and school). Texts and documents can be annotated and commented on by multiple students and teachers. • Mobility and portability; the iPad is a personal device and can act as a 1 to 1, anywhere, anytime learning device. • Advantages of common device (teacher professional development, student know- how). • Easy to use ‘creating’ capabilities (movie making, photos, documents). • Student email account easily accessible. • Can readily access browser pages. • Can be used to develop personal digital learning portfolios and/or journeys. • Excellent battery life means the iPad should be able to be used throughout the entire school day. • The touch interface allows a high level of interactivity. • Additional keyboard enables the student to use both interactive and keyboard facilities. • The instant startup of the iPad means greater use of class time for learning. • It is light and portable, easily carried in the school bag and to and from classes. • Easy to purchase and find support for. 2
iPad Requirements • The iPad must be at a minimum (5th or 6th generation or 9.7 running iOS 11 operating system as a minimum, new iPads will have IOS 14 installed). • 32GB is recommended. • It should be the Wi-Fi only model. Student iPads with mobile broadband (SIM) connectivity will not be permitted to utilise this feature whilst at school. We recommend that student iPads DO NOT have mobile broadband connectivity; they are more expensive, require contracts with mobile broadband providers, and carry inherent risks associated with unsupervised use by children. • We cannot recommend the iPad mini owing to the hazards associated with viewing a small screen for extended periods. • iTunes installed on a home computer or an iCloud account for backups. • An iTunes account. • A keyboard • A protective iPad carry case or sleeve (this may be part of the keyboard e.g. Rugged Folio). • iPad owner identification; possibly engraved. • Required apps installed To help with the purchase of your iPad the school facilitates the following portal with Winthrop. https://sales.winaust.com.au/shop/geraldtongsyr7 This portal provides you with a platform through which to purchase the appropriate iPad and accessories your child requires. The cost of these items is significantly reduced to other major vendors. 3
Management of the iPad OWNERSHIP The iPad your child uses for school should be one they have dedicated use of. It should not be a family or shared iPad. Consider ‘loaning’ the iPad to your child rather than gifting it. It is a subtle difference but one that emphasises the use of the iPad as a school learning tool rather than a toy. The iPad will remain your property and your child will use it throughout their time at school. It is suggested you consider an AppleCare+ Plan to ensure the working life of your child’s iPad for the next few years. Please consider insuring your child’s iPad through your own insurance policies. Your child will be responsible for the security and protection of their iPad. We recommend that you have your child agree to an iPad contract to govern its use at home. CONTENT We emphasise, that the iPad is a learning device for use at school. Whilst we will not prohibit students having personal content on the iPad, these must not compromise the ability to store school work or run apps required for school work. Your child will be responsible for any files, including images and movies, on their iPad. Our policies on learning technologies, electronic devices and behaviour management remain. Content that is considered offensive or inappropriate in a school setting will not be permitted on the iPad at school. Personal games are permitted on the iPad if they are rated 9+ or less. Regardless, games are not to be played on the iPad whilst at school. Failure to comply with this will be treated as a behaviour issue. Some apps are particularly discouraged. These include Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Despite their innocuous pretext, these apps can all too readily be used in a way that amounts to either cyber-bullying or compromises cyber security. They have no place on a school learning tool. We encourage you to explore the range of options in the “Restrictions” section of iPad Settings. ACCOUNT The iTunes account should be managed by a parent with the parent being the holder of a secure password, unknown to the student. This will ensure that you know what apps are installed on your child’s iPad, that your credit card details remain safe and that students do not install apps without your knowledge. For additional security, the iTunes account can be configured without credit card details; iTunes vouchers can be purchased as an alternative. Once the required list of apps are installed, the iTunes account will not need to be accessed for further purchases within the school term. Your child will be responsible for ensuring the iPad is charged and with them at school every day, that their files are saved correctly and that they abide by our school’s policies. 4
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY CHILD ’S EDUCATION IF THEY BREAK THEIR iPAD OR IT IS UNAVAILABLE FOR SOME TIME? Buying an iPad is a significant investment in your child’s education, and we plan to ensure that it is indeed a value for money investment. That said, it is not the be-all and end-all regarding an education at Geraldton Grammar School. Furthermore, we have several options including loan textbooks, school laptops and online access to school resources that will mean learning can continue unimpeded. More significantly will be the cost to yourself in repairing or replacing a damaged iPad. This is something we do not want to happen. Therefore we suggest you investigate options with your own house and contents insurance, that you consider an AppleCare+ Plan and that you purchase an iPad cover that matches both your child’s ability to look after their belongings and your willingness to pay for a replacement. HOW DO I PURCHASE THE PEARSON EBOOKS FOR MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE? Each of these texts are through an app called “Pearson eBook” that can be downloaded from the iTunes app store for free. To activate these, you will need to set up an account on the Pearson website and use the access key that you purchased through our school booklist supplier. Please do not download these using your own personal email accounts. Students can do this when they get to school, using their accounts HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TO INSTALL NEW APPS ONTO MY CHILD’S iPAD? We know that sometimes app writers update apps making them suitable when previously they were not, and sometimes teachers learn about an app that will give added benefit to the iPad program. Where this occurs, we will ask for apps additional to those in the list be added to student iPads. This will occur no more than once a term and only for free apps. In such an event you will be given plenty of notice. CARRYING AND STORAGE OF iPADS We advise students to purchase a hybrid storage solution that provides safety and storage for their iPad alongside the capacity to carry some additional resources. Students will carry their iPad and books for three lessons only between lockers and classes. When iPads are not being taken to class (Physical Education, lunch, recess) iPads will be locked in student lockers. The lockers are a safe place during school time. 5
USE OF iPADS IN AND OUT OF CLASS Teachers will direct students as to when and what iPads can be used for in class. Students will not be permitted to use iPads at recess, lunch. Students and parents are required to sign a copy of the iPad User Agreement to ensure a clear understanding of requirements exists. ACCOUNTS AND PASSWORDS Some apps require an account and password to be set up. Please help your child to do this using their school email and both of you keeping a copy of the password. Students regularly forget passwords, and for these accounts they should have them written discreetly somewhere. At school, online access will be filtered and monitored through our wireless network. When online at home, we recommend that the iPad is used in an area where parents can readily engage with their child regarding what they are doing. Students will be provided training in online safety at school and we urge parents to continue in building this awareness at home. Please visit: https://www.esafety.gov.au 6
ERGONOMICS At school we will limit the amount of time students will need to use the iPad (and other screens) in a day. We recommend you set your own limits at home as well. It is not healthy for students to have excessive screen time. The portability of the iPad introduces other hazards. The following may be useful in ensuring your child’s safety: • Promoting and encouraging a suitable posture whilst using the iPad is an important factor in preventing injury and promoting a healthy learning environment. It is important to ensure students maintain good posture, with a particular focus on their back, neck and shoulders, arms and forearms, wrists and hands. Students should avoid using an iPad while adopting awkward postures. Where extended usage (> 1 hour) is to be undertaken, a suitable desk and chair setup should be used. • Regularly rotate between iPad and paper-based activities where possible. Regularly rotate between typing-based and browsing tasks where possible. Where iPad use exceeds 30 minutes of continual work encourage short rest breaks (5 minutes for every 30 minutes) including stretching and exercises. • Work where lighting is good. Work in an area so that glare does not cause a visual disturbance. • Enlarge the print or change the contrast or brightness for better viewing. • Maintain a comfortable viewing distance from the iPad screen (45 - 70cm) 7
