BMG Key Activities (2019-2020) School Chalo Abhiyaan : This is an annual campaign conducted during the new academic year carried out in every BMGTM. This initiative aims to ensure every child is enrolled or regularized in school. Through this campaign more than 10866 children and community members had participated and pledged to bring every child to school in 2019-20. Outcome: The campaign witnessed participation of more than 10866 school children participated wwith hundreds of community members and teachers. Impact: A total of 1040 children were enrolled across all BMGs. Promoting Girls Education Through Distribution of Bicycles The bicycle distribution is an important initiative of BMGTM, where girls who are doing well is studies and are from poor family background are benefited so that they don’t find any difficult to commute due to lack of proper road and transport system. 1
Output: Total 235 bicycles were distributed altogether in Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh BMGTM. Impact: Girls enrollment and regularization have been enhanced across BMGTM . GIRLS MARCH TO SCHOOL This initiative was led by Bal Panchayat members to mark the International Day of the Girl Child reached out to all schools across BMGTM. Through the campaign community demanded free and compulsory education for girls till the age of 18. 2
Outcome: A total of 21050 participated in a ‘Girls March to School’ on International Girl’s Child Day in order to create awareness about the need for free and compulsory education for girls till the age of 18 across BMGTMs. Impact: Community strongly drew attention to the urgent need of free and compulsory education for girls till the age of 18 through “Girls March to school” awareness drive. Bal Panchayat Election Bal Panchayat election 2019-20 were organized across 241 BMGSTM within the month of September- December 2019. This year 241 Bal Panchayats were formed electing 2651 leaders across six states. These children actively participated and showed leadership skills by campaigning for the elections. Outcome: A total 241 newly elected Bal Panchayat formed and 2651 youth leaders were elected across 6 states. Impact: 2651 Bal Panchayat members elected and recognized by the respective Gram panchayat or local officials and they pledged to fight against any injustice and cruelty against children. 3
Enhancing the leadership skills among Children : A total of 394 Bal Panchayat leaders were oriented about the roles of Bal Panchayat, briefed about BMG and most importantly on child rights. The training focused on enhancing the child leadership and participation in decision making process. These trainings were conducted in different batches across 6 states. Outcome: Training on leadership and child participation was conducted with 394 Bal Panchayat office bearers across 6 states. Impact: Children realized about their core rights and exhibited through succeeding in BMG elections and proving themselves. Payal Jangid awarded Goalkeepers Global Goals Change maker Award A 17-year old child rights activists Payal Jangid from the hinterlands of Rajasthan was honored with the renowned ‘Change maker’ award by prestigious NGO, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, on 25th September 2019, for her successful mission of changing the age-old tradition of child marriage in her village Hinsla. 4
Outcome: She received the Global Goalkeeper award in New York at the opulent Global Goals Awards 2019 ceremony where the Foundation, set up by the founder of technology giant, Microsoft. Impact: Payal’s intervention has made her village child marriage free and her intervention also inspired other girls to raise their voices against age old tradition. Wear Helmet Campaign Taking a step further by aiming to curb the death rate of two wheeler rider in accidents at main Rohta Road, the Bal Panchayat of Pooth Khas and Dungur BMG along with Youth Group and Police Station Rohta organized importance of helmet awareness campaign and those found wearing helmets were provided with flowers, encouraging maintaining the practice of wearing helmet. Outcome: During the campaign around 42 two-wheeler riders who were found without helmets, the messages of wearing helmets and obey traffic rules were given to them. Impact: A sense of responsibility and road safety was conveyed through this innovative intervention across the Rohta block. 5
Ghar Ghar Satyarthi Campaign 2019 The Ghar Ghar Satyarthi campaign is a call to spread the messages of Noble Peace Laureate Mr. Kailash Satyarthi to all people of society. The campaign also focused to encourage leaders at every household level. 6
Output: Campaign was reached in 18 villages in which 2000 people participated and More than 900 people participated in the signature campaign to stop the child labour and cruelty against children. Impact: A sense of responsibility was developed to stop the child labour and cruelty against child across the BMGTM in Meerut. Himmat Yatra -2019 For eliminating the eve teasing and for creating safe environment for girls, the Himmat Yatra was stared in the year of 2018, for stopping the eve teasing and encourage people for stand by them. This year the Himmat Yatra was organized in four BMGTM s, starting from Dalampur BMG, the march was started in the leadership of Bal Panchayat. The pamphlets, posters regarding the messages of Noble Peace Laureate Mr. Kailash Satyarthi , were distributed in the BMGTM villages. Output: More than 180 girls along with 80 villagers participated in the march as core marchers. The local Police also appreciated the girls and ensured that the Police will be more vigilant to create the safer and secure environment for girls. Impact: Himmat Yatra boosted the confidence of girls, which has resulted the safe, and secure environment at across BMGTM s in Meerut. 7
Promoting child friendly classroom In order to promote child friendly classrooms in BMG school 42 classrooms were transformed as print rich classrooms in 22 BMGTM s in Koderma District and 20 in Giridih District and Teacher Learning Materials were also painted in the classrooms with some general information. Output: Total 42 Joyful and Print rich classrooms were developed in 44 BMGTM s of Koderma and Giridih districts of Jharkhand. Impact: In 42 School’s classrooms were got print rich facelift as part of the child friendly classrooms with the collective effort. Now children learn their lessons sitting in classrooms through colorful posters with cartoon character, trees, flowers and rainbows. Champa Kumari won prestigious Diana Award Thirteen-year-old Champa Kumari, who won the prestigious Diana Award for her work against child marriages in mica-mining areas of Jharkhand was felicitated and honored by Jharkhand Governor Smt. Draupadi Murmu at Raj Bhawan. 8
Output: Champa Kumari won the prestigious Diana Award for her initiative to stop child marriage at her villages. Impact: Other girls in the village have also started fighting against early marriages and there has been a change in the number of girls getting married since Champa declared her village child marriage free. Now child marriages are very rare and girls are aware about their rights. Surakshit Bachpan Surakshit Paryavaran Campaign 14493 saplings were planted across Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Meerut BMGs under the ‘Surakshit Bachpan Surakshit Paryavaran Campaign’ for environment conservation and as a measure towards combating climate change. 9
Outcome: Total 14493 saplings were planted across Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Meerut BMGsunder the ‘Surakshit Bachpan Surakshit Paryavaran Campaign. Impact: Community has become more sensitive towards an environment and ecosystem and now they individually self -sustaining the ecosystem with plantation drive. A voter’s awareness campaign A voter’s awareness campaign programme was organized at Kachariyadih BMG in Koderma. KSCF collaborated with gram panchayat and district administration to create awareness about voter’s rights and their duties in kothiyar panchayat. It was held on 29th April 2019 in which 375 people participated in the programme. Output: The main objective of the campaign was to increase the voting percentage of Kothiyar panchayat which was observed to have a 20% voting rate during the 2014 general election and after the election voting percentage reached up to 67% which was a big change. Impact: Entire campaign was turned out great success thus encouraged the voters to cast their votes and strengthen their voting rights. Construction of Faguni School: In Faguni BMG village, KSCF constructed an informal school with 2 classrooms. In construction process community was involved which also made them realize about their collective responsibility for any development program at their BMG. Sub Divisional Magistrate Mr. Chandra Shekhar inaugurated the school. 10
Output: A School building was constructed for informal education for children in Faguni BMGTM. Impact: This initiative is helping over 60 students to get access of education and also gain a holistic learning experience in Faguni BMGTM. Library Setup in schools To encourage the reading and learning habit among the children library setup was done in 5 schools of BMGTM in Karnataka. Outcome: 5 libraries have been installed in 5 schools of Karnataka Impact: 2000 children will be able to access the library. Anti-Alcohol Campaign An awareness campaign was launched by the Bal panchayat members of Bal Mitra Gram Sahwa BMGTM in Madhya Pradesh to stop the illegal selling of alcohol. Outcome: 120 children along with the community members participated.Impact: Total 4 illegal shops were closed in Bhilay and Sahawa BMGTM s. 11
Solving the issue of Water scarcity In Topa Pahadi BMGTM, was identified as a village facing severe water scarcity which forced the girls to stay out of the school. KSCF constructed a deep bore well in the village and attached a water tank with a storage capacity of 5000-litre water. This was inaugurated on 25th January 2020 in the presence of community leaders. Outcome: A 5000-litre water tank was constructed at the Topa Pahadi in Nawada bock of Bihar. Impact: This intervention has solved the issue of water scarcity and impacted 49 households from Topa Pahadi village. Similarly, people from Faguni and Tetariya and a few hamlets/ tribal settlements can also have access to water from this facility. Ensuing access to potable water Access to potable drinking water is a major problem especially in Jharkhand and Rajasthan BMGTM s. At present shallow water consumption (through an individual and public hand pumps) gets dry in summers and the water supply is not up to the prescribed standards. To address the issue of drinking water KSCF has ensured installation of 33 new handpumps and repairing of 99 handpumps with support of PHED department. 12
Output: 33 (KSCF-5, PHED- 28) new hand pumps were installed and 99 (KSCF-20, PHED- 79), hand pumps were repaired in the BMGTM s of Jharkhand and Rajasthan. Impact: Access of potable water has been improved at across BMGTMs and surrounding villages in Jharkhand and Rajasthan. Water conservation through check dams: The safe drinking water and water for irrigation are the major concern across the project area in Jharkhand. Water level has gone drastically down due to lack of rain from last two years. The only way out is to create a mechanism for water restoration through construction of check dams, big ponds and wells. KSCF has collaborated with forest department and lobbied for the construction of 25 check dams across project area at the identified locations. Forest department has accepted the request and the construction of 3 check dams have been started in Kaniken BMG Output: Total 25 locations were identified for construction of check dams out of them 3 check dams construction work has been started. Impact: Construction of check dams will not only increase the ground water level but also ensure the safe drinking water and water for irrigation purpose for the community. Village Transformation through BMG The BMG Duhar Mala lies 4km away from the main road, till today there is no electricity or water connectivity in the village. But today, the village now has proper drinking water facility with the pipeline connection on 1st January 2020. The Primary school, which was locked for so many years, is now functional with the appointment of teachers. Also, three solar plates were installed in the village to light it up and this has been successful for the first attempt. But the electric connection is the other immediate need of the village. Efforts are being made by the stakeholders and activist to connect the village with electricity through liasoning with the government. 13
