PROCESS AND FORMS ABOUT TAEP The Arts Empowerment Project’s mission is to break the cycles of violence and trauma through arts opportunities that ignite change in vulnerable youth. We believe in building a community that gives every child arts experiences that broaden horizons, foster resilience and build essen- tial life-skills. ELIGIBILITY AND STEPS To be eligible for classes in this semester’s program, the referred youth must have the following forms online filled out by a guardian ad litem, social worker, case worker, or a fostering parent. ACCOMMODATIONS Public transportation (to and from the site) will be offered at no cost to the students (CATS transit passes). Open to children with no prior violin experience as well as those who have just started their studies. AGES: 4-7 | AVERAGE DAILY SCREEN TIME - 2 to 2 1/2 hours (for 5 days). ART CAMPS SUMMER STUDIO BYTES WEEK 5: MAGIC MIRROR REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JULY 17 Optical illusions, puzzle patterns, and fun house mirror distortions… come explore the magical side art with these projects that play with tricks and treats for the eye. Try tessellations, draw spellbinding mazes, and build a shadow box that defies the laws of physics. This week we will make comic and comedy themed art projects that are especially goofy and outrageous. ART CAMPS SUMMER STUDIO BYTES WEEK 7: BALLOONS AND BUBBLES REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JULY 31 Comics, animation, manga and illustration enthusiasts are welcomed to this week-long exploration of narrative storytelling through visual art! Create original characters and sto- rylines and learn the techniques and materials used by the comic pros. CAMP DATES : AUG 3 - AUG 7 | Monday – Thursday | AGES: 13-18 Daily Schedule 3:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. = Teen Activity Group Chat 3:45 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. = Teen Individual Sessions SUMMER STUDIO BYTES WEEK 8: NATURAL WONDERS REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JULY 10 Waterfalls, glaciers, giant redwoods, and deep dark caves; visit the glories of nature through art at home! By taking materials and inspiration from the neighborhood park or your own backyard, we will make paintings, prints, and collages that explore the wonders of our National Parks, from the grandiose to the microscopic. YOUTH SUMMER CAMP Monday, August 3 - Friday, August 7 from 1:00pm-4:00pm daily. This five-day camp is designed for kids ages 11-15. They will learn basic wheel-throwing skills and a variety of finishing techniques for handles such as coils, sculpted handles, and traditional, pulled handles. Students will learn techniques using the wheel to make pots of different styles, such as: mugs, pitchers, casseroles, and lidded jars. Students will also learn basic glazing techniques to make their projects truly one of a kind. Projects will be ready two weeks after for pick-up. *First come first served, limited space available. Camp sessions will have limited participation and the work space has been restructured for social distancing. Campers and camp staff will be required to wear face coverings and there will be no sharing of tools or supplies. Pickup and drop off procedures have been modified to minimize risk. Clayworks staff and camp staff have undergone training on proper cleaning and disinfecting and new procedures have been put into place. We are following the guidelines set-out by the CDC and the American Camp Association. VIRTUAL SUMMER CAMPS OBSERVATIONAL SKILLS + DRAWING PRINCIPLES Dates: Monday, July 20–Friday, July 24, 2020 Times: 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. daily, virtual through Zoom Ages: 11–16 year-olds What you’ll do: Learn drawing fundamentals and make your own drawings of common subjects Tools you’ll use: Pencil Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing by mastering basic principles, including line, tone, light, texture, composition, depth, and perspective. McColl Center alumnus artist Chris Clamp will lead the group in exploring portraiture, figure drawing, still life, imaginative imagery, and abstraction. Students will dis- cover the secrets behind famous drawings. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. All supplies will be provided in an art box (Mecklenburg County delivery included). •The camp will meet through a secure Zoom link. We ask all participants to connect between 8:45 and 9:00 a.m. to begin instruction promptly by 9:05. GELATIN PRINTMAKING Dates: Monday, July 27–Friday, July 31, 2020 Times: 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. daily virtual through Zoom Ages: 11–16 year-olds What you’ll do: Create your own gelatin plates and learn techniques for making prints Tools you’ll use: Gelatin, botanicals, handmade stencils, found materials Students will learn printmaking with a gelatin plate, a non-toxic method of print- ing to paper or cloth. Charlotte-based artist Laurie Smithwick will teach diverse techniques such as rolling ink and pulling a print (including ghost prints), as well as more complex techniques. Students will be able to create transfers, botanical prints, and collages with handmade stencils and found materials. Artwork creat- ed during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. All supplies will be provided in an art box (Mecklenburg County delivery included). •The camp will meet through a secure Zoom link. MURAL DESIGN Dates: Monday, August 3–Friday, August 7, 2020 Times: 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. daily virtual through Zoom Ages: 11–16 year-olds What you’ll do: Plan and create a mural Tools you’ll use: Pencil and paint Students will learn the fundamentals of making a mural: how to design, plan, sketch, and bring it to life with various painting techniques. Charlotte-based street artists Arko and Owl will share their secrets to creating murals and tech- niques they use to paint, along with an introduction to other contemporary mu- ral artists in the city. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. All supplies for the week will be provided in an art box (Mecklenburg County de- livery included). ILLUSTRATION + CHARACTER DESIGN (VIRTUAL) Dates: Monday, August 10–Friday, August 14, 2020 Times: 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. daily virtual through Zoom Ages: 11–16 year-olds What you’ll do: Learn illustration and character design through creating comic books, storyboards, and more. Tools you’ll use: Various mediums Students will develop skills in illustration and character design through visual storytelling projects that spark their imagination. McColl Center alumnus artist Marcus Kiser will lead the group in projects including original comic books, sto- ryboards, character sculptures, and other illustrations. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. SUMMER CAMPS 2020 Keeping You Safe This Summer We’ve introduced enhanced safety and social distancing guidelines for all Summer Camps, along with new cleaning FOR RISING 7TH - 10TH GRADE and disinfecting schedules. “Behind-the-Scenes: The Girl Who Swallowed A Cactus” - Two-Week Acting Studio Dates: July 27 - Aug. 7 | Time: 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. | Location: ImaginOn After Simon’s teacher mentions the universe is growing, he becomes obsessed with discov- ering the Edge. Meanwhile, at the Edge of Everything is a boy who fills his time with things like galaxy-spanning train sets and ten-million-piece puzzles, but longs for a friend. When Simon is rocketed into space, their worlds collide and neither will ever be the same again. This week culminates with a performance for friends and family the evening of Friday, July 17. “Behind the Scenes ” - Two-Week Digital Radio Play Dates: July 27-Aug. 7 | Time: 2 p.m.-5 p.m. | Location: Online via Zoom Victor Frankenstein creates life in the form of a terrifying monster! But will this new creation ultimately become friend or foe? Campers will work together creating live sound effects to help tell their story in the style of an old-time radio show.
