2020 Term 2 Week 6 On a wintery morning this week, staff devotion was held in the Nature Play area to acknowledge National Sorry Day and pray for our nation. Faith Focus Teamwork and The Trinity Many people in Australia are eagerly awaiting the return of team sports, including Australian Rules Football next week. Not me, however. You see, I am currently leading the St Mark’s staff tipping competition and was hoping the season might end with only one round being played! Unfortunately, now it looks like I will have to try to win the old fashioned way over numerous rounds. Never mind. Team sports are about more than sports. They are about teams, comradery and community. This is no doubt what many people have missed about them. The exercise, fun and competition is one thing, but the enjoyment that comes from a joint effort, time with others and working together, is quite another. This week in the church, we are celebrating Trinity Sunday. It is one of the more unusual church festivals, but a day we set aside to remember that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Many of us were baptised into this name and many of us begin our worship services or devotions in the same way. This is not by accident. The Bible talks about God himself as a team, a community of persons, working together for the creation, redemption and ongoing blessing of the world. The Trinity gives us a model of human behaviour and community to follow, where everyone uses their God-given gifts in a joint effort and for the common good of all. I certainly see this at work in our St Mark’s community. As team sports resume and social restrictions gradually ease, we look forward to re-discovering the joy of life in community. This will be harder for some than others. But God is here to help. He is the ultimate team and he always has a place for us on his. ‘The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you’ (2 Cor 13:13).
