Term 2, Week 4 ŌPĀWA SCHOOL 30 Ford Road, Christchurch Telephone: 332 6374 Cell: 022 319 1181 26th May 2021 NEWSLETTER Email: admin@opawa.school.nz Website: www.opawa.school.nz Kia ora tātou and talofa lava, The past fortnight has been super busy with much to celebrate. I have had the privilege of ‘formally’ observing many of our students and teachers in action during learning time and there is high engagement and plenty of learning throughout the school. Today our Year ¾ students had a surprise performance of our Story we are focusing on this term - Te Waka Huruhurumanu. It’s about Pōua and Tāua and their magic mōkihi. Waka Huruhurumanu is its name. It’s made from raupō and harakeke and they keep it in a special place in their garden….Michael, Todd and Rach created much anticipation by ‘blacking out the classroom windows’ before school started. They then acted and narrated the story to the students, including using an amazing set with props that the three of them had created for the ‘show’. We are truly blessed to have such dedicated teachers in our kura! As part of implementing our Cultural Narrative (the unique Ōpāwa story of where we sit geographically and culturally, gifted to us from Matauraka Mahaanui and Ngāi Tahu), a group of our students have been working with a senior landscape architect from Jasmax - Adrian Taylor. The Tamariki have considered colours, textures, sizes, rain and sun requirements and the positions around the kura (school) that the plants will be planted into. On Thursday 20th May we planted the 175 new native plants. It was a team effort with six tamariki, four parents; four staff; Adrian (Landscape Expert from Jasmax) and two other Jasmax team members (David Wilson and Marcela Ramos Monarrez) all mucking in. Rob spent several hours preparing the ground. Adrian laid the plants in their correct positions and we got to do the fun bit ....planting. We met in Whaea Tracy’s room for karakia; instructions from Adrian and the team; Planting; Staffroom for kai ‘n’ cuppa; Mihi whakamutuka; Karakia whakamutuka; Hīmene. You can see our new plants in front of the whare pukapuka (library), office, alongside Room 6 (our Te Reo Whare) and also in front of the hall. As guardians of our place (kaitiakitanga), it is really important that we all take care of our new landscaping - Mā tatou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei - For us and our children after us. (Ngāi Tahu whakataukī – proverb about looking after our resources for future generations) Have a lovely couple of weeks everyone. Ngā mihi, Sally
