Michael Lee Middle School Principal michael_lee@ofs.edu.sg Boys Under 13 Last Man Standing (LMS) Cricket We would like to congratulate the OFS Under 13 cricket team for winning the LMS final on Wednesday, 28 November 2019. The boys put on a stellar effort to overcome a shaky start to the game. After SCC scored 28 runs in the first 2 overs, the boys began encouraging each other more, eventually breaking through with the first wicket bowled from Mohammad Laraib Rahman. Some great fielding followed by Captain Fateh Bindra hitting the stumps in a run out, not once...but twice! SCC ended up scoring 91 all out. Our batting openers, Shreyas Bhaskar and Aadit Garg displayed great courage and patience as they put on a partnership of 51 before Aadit was caught out. Runs kept flowing when Devansh Kohli took the crease with the boys closing out the game comfortably with 7 wickets in hand. Congratulations to Shreyas Bhaskar who took “Man of the Match” with 38 runs and 1 wicket. This win is for all the 60 students that have participated in the ASSP cricket sessions this semester. Well done OFS Under 13 cricket team for a great season of cricket! (Andrew Jacobs and Kevin Watson – U13 Boys’ Cricket Coaches)
Overseas Family School Middle School Newsletter Dec 19 / Jan 20 Deputy Principal’s Message It has been a busy end to the first semester with plenty of exciting events taking place. During Languages’ Week, students were able to learn fun facts about the diverse range of languages celebrated at OFS. The week culminated in a Multi-Cultural Dress Day. This was followed by Kindness Week, run by the Middle School Student Council where students explored ways to show kindness to others. The Semester 1 examinations enabled students to develop their self-management and affective skills, and to experience examination conditions in preparation for High School. Grade 7 students also had their annual camp with Camp Challenge Sentosa, which allowed them to develop teamwork skills and become risk-takers. Grade 6 students have been participating in our Model United Nations (MUN) program, to learn about the perspectives of different countries in relation to cultural heritage. Students will finish off the semester with a Talent Show which will showcase the many skills Middle School students have to offer. We wish all our students a restful break and look forward to Semester 2. Master Policy: To maintain a happy, safe and effective school for overseas families living in Singapore MYP Action Club The MYP Action Club harvested last week for the third time since planting seedlings and seeds in the garden plot in September 2019. The harvests consisting of Kale, Kai Lan, Lettuce and Swiss Chard, have been taken to a community fridge in Tampines for donation. The MYP Action Club also got together with students in the Elementary School who take part in the Girl Scouts program. The MYP Action students shared aspects of gardening and harvesting with the Girl Scouts group who were working towards attaining their Gardening badges. The two groups will meet again and harvest together. (Mrs. Philippa Spendelow and Esther Lam – MYP Action Club Supervisors) Languages’ Week – 4 to 8 November 2019 Languages’ Week was once again a fun and exciting time for our students. In preparation for Languages’ Week, a poster competition was launched in Quarter 1 for students to advertise the event in the language they are studying and to reflect on why we celebrate Languages’ Week. We were very impressed to see the creative, artistic and linguistic talents of the language posters. All completed posters were used to decorate the Language Acquisition floor and classrooms of the Middle School. In Homebase each morning, a different language was celebrated with facts about the country and culminated with a quiz on Friday. On Friday lunchtime, the Languages’ Week celebration was held in the Auditorium. All students were invited to participate in the different activities such as dressing up as a French revolutionary or a Spanish Flamenco dancer and Mexican Chaparrito, writing Chinese calligraphy, making Japanese origami, playing a German Octoberfest children’s game and dressing in Indian cultural dress! The event culminated in dancing and singing to music videos representing all the languages. All students were invited to celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity of OFS with a Multicultural/Language Dress Day on Friday and it was great to see the effort they put into preparing their outfits. They looked colourful and wonderful! It was fantastic to see the students’ appreciation of the different cultural and linguistic activities and displaying the Learner Profile attributes of being Risk-takers, Open-minded and Balanced.
