JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2021 A COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND PUBLIC INFORMATION PUBLICATION Petsworth Elementary School Proud, Positive, and Productive! A Message From Your Principal Dear Patriot Families, I am so happy to ring in 2021 at Petsworth Elementary! Thank you so much for your support of our community during the first months of the 20-21 school year. We had much to learn about providing virtual learning and how to bring back our students a group at a time. Our faculty and staff made the days prior to the Winter Break rich with instruction that incorporated the joy of the holiday season. We are starting January in a virtual setting to ensure the health and safety of our community, but we hope to return to the in-person, hybrid schedule by mid-month. We’ll be wrapping up the second quarter at the close of January and kicking off Quarter 3 on February 4th. During this time, teachers will be monitoring the success of their instructional efforts through student assessments. The information they collect will help with planning lessons in the upcoming quarter. Attendance significantly impacts achievement. It is vital that students have direct instruction from their teachers (whether in-person on the hybrid schedule or on Zoom) and complete assignments to have the best chance for success in 2021. I encourage families to stay in touch with teachers and the office whenever circumstances keep a student from attending school. We must work as a team toward creating our very best Patriots! I hope you will find many blessings in 2021 as we set goals for personal, academic, and community-wide success! Petsworth had our very own Story Walk. Six signs were posted beside the bus loop along the sidewalk by the cafeteria in December. This was to encourage and provide a fun and different way for parents and guardians to read with their child. Look for more books in the coming months. Prior to the event, parents were asked to sign up for a timeslot to bring their students or family members. Even with the cold temperatures, the entire event was held outside in order to comply with social distancing. There were 79 student runners, 58 family runners and 28 spectators who joined Mrs. Watkins, Petsworth PE teacher, for this special event. Many staff volunteers assisted with directing participants around the course. This annual run or walk event encourages students and families to bring a non-perishable food item when they participate. The school then donates the food items to the food pantry at Salem United Methodist Church. This year 425 items were donated. Pictured here along with Mrs. Watkins, left to right are: Family members-Kayden Dixon and Kaylee Burrell, Caleb Briggs, and Kalee Smith.
