Introduction Research shows that when people exercise to strengthen their legs and core, their balance improves, and their risk of falls reduces by almost a third. Community exercise classes will support people to improve their strength and balance and help them live stronger for longer. Look for the tick when selecting a class to know it meets nationally agreed standards. If you are new to exercise, getting back into exercise or use a walking aid we recommend contacting the class instructor to discuss your situation. Classes marked Gentle Start in this guide offer gentler exercises which will not involve getting up or down onto the floor. There are a range of classes available, so pick one that interests you and fits your current level of ability. If you are concerned about your health, chat with your GP first to discuss what sorts of exercise are good for you In home strength and balance support If you have had a fall or feel like you can’t attend community strength and balance classes because of your physical or health limitations, talk to your doctor or health professional as in-home strength and balance support may be appropriate for you.
