Welcome Hello and a very warm welcome from West Craven High School. West Craven serves its local and wider community as a small and vibrant secondary school for young people aged 11 to 16 years. At West Craven we know that you want the best for your child – and so do we! We endeavour to give our students the very best start in life. The dedicated team of staff ensure that students know that they can do anything they set their hearts on – that we will teach, support, guide and mentor them throughout their time with us. Our culture and ethos promotes high aspirations and expectations, balanced with the highest level of care and support. Teaching and Learning At West Craven High School we have a dedicated team of teaching staff. Our staff range from the very experienced to the newly qualified. All are committed to providing the very best for every student. We believe this balance between experience and youth helps foster a high quality learning environment. Each student is valued as an individual and is encouraged to take an active part in all aspects of school life. We recognise that all students have different strengths, aptitudes, interests, areas for development and preferred ways of learning. A culture of high expectations alongside a curriculum and lessons personalised to meet the needs of all students underpins our aim to bring out the best in all our students. Our Curriculum At Key Stage 3 we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, building upon the experiences in English and Maths at primary school and broadening students’ experiences in a range of subjects including Science, History, Geography, alongside practical subjects such as Art, Drama, Technology and Music. We aim to nurture the social, moral and cultural interests and experiences of students within the subjects they learn and also through the RE and PSE curriculum. At Key Stage 4 we encourage students to maintain a balance of core subjects including English, Maths, Science and a Humanities subject. Beyond this we aim to provide opportunities to suit all students with academic, practical and vocational courses on offer. Able and Talented Students We provide opportunities to stretch and challenge the most able inside the classroom and beyond. Our Key Stage 4 curriculum encourages the most able to attain the English Baccalaureate, a suite of subjects including English, Maths, Science (our most able will study Triple Science), a Humanities subject and a language. This qualification is highly regarded by universities as a balanced foundation for higher education. There will be opportunities for our most able to study additional qualifications such as Further Maths. We actively encourage our most able to read ambitious and challenging texts to broaden their minds and vocabulary. We are proud to be part of the Pendle Elite programme, a unique training and extra-curricular programme set up by Nelson and Colne College. The programme runs over three years to help students prepare for College, progress to top universities in the country, and ultimately reach their career aspiration. Community Involvement and Extracurricular Community Links We have been serving the West Craven community for over 70 years and have developed strong links with individuals and organisations. IN THE NEWS IN THE NEWS Results Day Students at West Craven High School were all smiles after opening their GCSE results envelopes to find a range of high grades. They celebrated with family, friends and staff from the Academy as they unveiled results which have helped them to progress to a wide range of college courses, apprenticeships and employment. Amongst the students celebrating were twins Michael and Alan Hanson who achieved four grade 8s, three grade 7s and six grade 6s between them. They have now progressed to study A Levels at Nelson and Colne College. Charley Berry achieved a grade 9 in English as well as grade 8s in Biology, History and Art and former GCSE Results Day Head Girl Samantha Kendall was delighted with a grade 9 in Art. Life at West Craven High School Care and Support We aim to offer high levels of care and support for all our students. Form tutors play a vital role in this and every day begins with a form period. Each year group has a dedicated non-teaching Progress Leader available at all times during the day. A dedicated Attendance Officer works with parents and students to ensure excellent attendance and punctuality. Our SENCO and team of Teaching Assistants provide tailored support and intervention for students with additional needs. This support underpins the progress students are able to make in their learning. House System Every student and member of staff at West Craven High School will belong to a ‘house’. These are Aire, Calder, Ribble and Wharfe. Houses give students a sense of belonging as well as providing opportunities for healthy competition and also charity fundraising work. That competitiveness will be brought out in form time competitions, challenges and of course through sporting events. Leadership Opportunities There are numerous leadership opportunities for students of all ages. In year 7 students will have the opportunity to be a form monitor or they could become involved in the school council. There are leadership opportunities within the PE department and students may wish to become library monitors.
