In-Person Learning Plan January 19, 2021 - Jen School
Message from Jen School Administration

When determining the right time to bring students back to in-person learning, our first question has always been how to do
so safely. We have monitored the Return to school metrics numbers very closely to determine when to re-open school for
in-person learning. We will be implementing new procedures and practices as recommended by ISBE, the CDC, IDPH, and
CCDPH. These new procedures will be strictly adhered to by students and faculty for the safety of all.

Planning Principles

    - Safety for students, for faculty, for families.
    - Collaborative planning with regulatory and partnering agencies such as our sending school districts, IDPH, CCDP,
         ISBE and Human Resources Department.
    - Continuity of supports for students, academically, social-emotionally, and vocationally.
    - The Jen School planning team consists of:
              - Ann M. Craig – Director of Educational Services/Principal
              - Heather Lischett – Assistant Principal for Vocational Educational Services and Student Services
              - Tracy Mullen – School Nurse
Parents/Guardians will have the option to choose either in-person instruction or full remote learning. Both options will
continue to provide supportive, quality educational services. We are requesting parents and students commit to one
option until the end of the third quarter. Flexibility between options can be discussed with the administration and the
classroom team.

In-person instruction will include the following requirements from the Illinois State Board of Education:

              1. 6 feet social distancing must be maintained as much as possible
              2. Masks must be worn by all Staff and students (unless there are exemptions approved by a medical
professional or IEP team); please contact school nurse and Jen school administration to discuss
                   exemptions
              3. Courses, subjects, and schedules may be modified
              4. Symptom screenings and temperature checks should occur
              5. Schoolwide cleaning and disinfection should be increased
              6. Visitors to the building should be limited

Schedule

Jen School students and faculty will quarantine after the holiday break – January 4 – January 18, 2021. All students and
faculty return to in-person instruction January 19, 2021

Students choosing to remain fully remote may log in to classes live via google meets and complete assignments per teacher
requirements and other online resources. We require parents and students to choose between either in-person or remote
learning schedules. Frequent transition between in-person and full remote is discouraged.

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures - Daily Screening/Certification

All parents/guardians should perform daily health checks before sending their child to school. The following three
questions should be part of the daily health check.

    1. Have you received a confirmed diagnosis for coronavirus (COVID-19) by a coronavirus (COVID-19) test or from a
diagnosis by a health care professional in the past 14 days?
    2. Have you had close contact with or cared for someone diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 14 days?
                                                                2
3. Have you experienced any cold or flu-like symptoms in the last 14 days (to include: fever or temperature of greater
than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit/38 degrees Celsius, cough, difficulty breathing, sore throat, pressure in the chest,
extreme fatigue, earache, persistent headache, diarrhea, and/or persistent loss of smell or taste)?

Students showing any signs of illness should not go into their transportation and may not attend school, and Nurse Mullen
should be contacted by the student’s parent/guardian.

Upon arrival at school, temperature checks and a questionnaire will be conducted by designated staff before entering the
building. If a student's temperature is below 100.4 and they are symptom-free, they will enter the building and report to
their classroom. Students will not be allowed to self-certify. Please note that students may also be required to do
temperature checks and health screenings prior to getting on their morning transportation. These screenings will still need
to be conducted upon arrival to school even if they were done prior to transport.

Students refusing to complete screenings will not be allowed in the building.

Dismissal

Students will be dismissed individually from their classrooms. When their transportation arrives, a staff member will
communicate with the classroom. The student will be walked out of the building.

Face Coverings/Face masks

The Jen School will require face masks to be worn by Students, Staff, and visitors at all times as follows:

    - On transportation, unless transported by a parent or guardian
    - Upon arrival at school / When leaving school
    - While in any area of the school building
    - Face masks must be worn over the mouth and nose
    - Face shield will only be authorized under special circumstances with a face mask
    - Gaiters, Bandanas, Handkerchiefs, Scarfs will not be permitted.

Exemptions will be provided for students who can demonstrate one or more of the following:

    - Students with a pre-existing medical condition, mental health condition, or disability that would prevent them
from wearing any of the face coverings outlined. The condition must be specific, and the exemption must support
that these students could not be accommodated using any of the approved face coverings listed. A doctor's
excusal is required and needs to be provided and discussed with Jen School Administration prior to returning to
         the building.
    - Students and staff who are hearing impaired, or communicating with a person who is hearing impaired, where the
ability to see the mouth is essential for communication. If not wearing a mask for this period of time, these
individuals must utilize the face shield.

Cloth face masks must be washed daily, or a new face mask must be worn each day of the week and laundered on the
weekends.

Non-compliance Mask Wearing

For the wellbeing of all of our students, our staff and all of our families it is important to ensure compliance with the CDC
and IDPH directives pertaining to wearing masks in public.

    - Students will be reminded to wear masks properly and as intended.

                                                               3
- Students who continue to refuse to wear a mask will be required to participate in learning in an alternative
learning environment for the remainder of the day.
    - Continued patterns of non-compliance may result in the student being assigned to remote instruction for the
          remainder of the grading period.
    - The parent/guardian and/or Jen School may request an IEP meeting to discuss non-compliance behaviors.

Social Distancing

Social distancing will be enforced to the extent possible. Excess furniture has been removed from classrooms in order to
spread out student desks as much as possible. Other rooms/spaces will also be utilized when necessary to spread out. Any
common areas that are used to allow for more social distancing will be sanitized between uses, so they are safe for each
incoming class. Outdoor learning spaces, like the garden, the picnic area, and fields/blacktop areas for PE, will be used to
the greatest extent possible, keeping weather conditions and air quality in mind for safety as well.

Signage has been installed throughout the building on the floors and walls to remind and promote social distancing.

Non-compliance Social Distancing

    - Students will be reminded to maintain proper Social Distancing.
    - Students who continue to refuse to maintain proper Social Distancing will be required to participate in learning in
an alternative learning environment for the remainder of the day.
    - Continued patterns of non-compliance may result in the student being assigned to remote instruction for the
          remainder of the grading period.
    - The parent/guardian and/or Jen School may request an IEP meeting to discuss non-compliance behaviors.

Morning Snack/Lunch
    - Lunch will be eaten in the classroom. Jen School will provide both a morning snack and lunch.
    - There is to be no food brought into the classroom other than what is provided by Jen School.
    - When the COVID-19 metrics numbers allow, students may eat lunch in the school cafeteria, following social
          distancing protocols.
    - Hand washing is expected, before and after eating lunch.
    - Per ISBE and IDPH guidelines, students may remove their mask to eat their lunch in the classroom. Social
          distancing will be expected.

Water/Hydration

Students will receive new water bottles. Staff will collect water bottles at the end of the day to sanitize and return to
students daily.
Lockers
Students will be able to use their lockers for coats and backpacks. Due to the size of the rooms in which the lockers are
located, only one student will be allowed in the room at a time. Students will be required to use hand sanitizer prior to
entering and exiting the area.

Physical Education Classes
During this time, the curriculum will focus on wellness, lifestyle, nutrition, individual fitness training and overall health.
Students attending in-person classes will follow a 45-minute physical education class either outside or in the gym.
Students and staff will be required to wear masks and maintain social distance while participating in physical education
classes indoors. Social distancing protocols will be maintained during outdoor physical education classes.
                                                                4
Students who are on the remote learning rotation or are opting to remain on remote learning will participate in online
learning activities with Jen School faculty.

Health Protocols

Jen School will have the following available to students and staff:

    - Hand Sanitizer
             - Hand sanitizer stations have been installed throughout the school
             - The CDC recommends using hand sanitizers "with greater than 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol in
healthcare settings. Unless hands are visibly soiled, an alcohol-based hand rub is preferred over soap and
water in most clinical situations due to evidence of better compliance compared to soap and water. Hand
rubs are generally less irritating to hands and are effective in the absence of a sink."
             - Antibacterial soap is available in all bathrooms/kitchens.
             - Gloves
    - Masks
             - Cloth masks
             - Disposable masks

Handwashing

In line with state guidelines, the school continues to advocate for frequent handwashing lasting at least 20 seconds.
Additionally, hand sanitizer stations will be located throughout building.

Siblings or Other Students in the Household

If a student is excluded from school due to COVID-19 symptoms or has had a positive COVID-19 test, his or her siblings or
other students living in the same household will be questioned, and if they exhibit symptoms, they will also be excluded
from school. If they do not show symptoms, they may still be excluded from school and asked to self-quarantine based on
local health department guidelines.
