River Valley School District Implementation of Chapter PI-26 What is PI-26? The purpose of education for employment programs is to prepare all students for employment, to promote cooperation between business and industry and public schools, and to establish a role for public schools in the economic development of Wisconsin. Academic and Career Planning & PI-26 Academic and Career Planning, or ACP, is a student-driven, adult-supported process in which students create and cultivate their own unique and information-based visions for post-secondary success, obtained through self-exploration, career exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (http://dpi.wi.gov/acp) in the PI-26 legislation requires public school districts to provide academic and career planning services to students in grades 6 through 12 beginning in the 2017-18 school year. These new academic and career planning requirements connect school districts’ education for employment plans and programs to the new academic and career planning requirements. https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/code/register/1996/483b/insert/pi26.pdf Career Planning at Middle School Careers is a required eighth grade exploratory course. This course is designed to further introduce students to the wide variety of career opportunities. Students will research and plan for their careers including preparing a class presentation. They will learn about the job process including how to find and get a job, be successful on the job, meet career goals, stay safe on the job, and manage money. Learners will analyze their interests, skills, values, aptitudes, and abilities using the career software, Career Locker and Career Cruising. Students will complete a job shadow and project related to their job shadow. Telephone and email etiquette will be included in the job shadow unit. Learners will demonstrate proficient keyboarding speed as per state standards. Career Locker assessments include: ● Learning Styles Assessment ● Self-Awareness Inventory ● Work Values Assessment ● Work Skills Assessment ● Personal Globe Inventory Career Cruising assessments include: ● Learning Styles Inventory ● Career Matchmaker Career Planning at High School Career Cruising is an online resource available to all students. In grade 9, students will begin their knowledge of academic and career planning by focusing on: ● Personality Inventory ● Learning Styles Assessment ● Work Values Assessment ● Interest Inventory ● Skills Assessment ● Data Analysis of state and district test results ● Understanding of CTE Courses, AP Courses, and Transcripted or Dual Credit classes offered at RVHS ● Student, Parent, Counselor Meetings In grade 10, students explore academic and career planning through: ● Major/Occupation Explorations ● Career Expos & Industry Tours ● Employer Panels ● Curriculum Links to Occupations ● Student, Parent, Counselor Meetings In grade 11, students continue planning by: ● Job Shadows ● Campus Tours ● Student, Parent, Counselor Meetings ● Career Expos & Industry Tours ● Mock College Applications ● Reality Workshop In grade 12, students complete the academic and career planning process through: ● Letters of Recommendation ● Personal Statements ● Scholarship Search and Completion ● FAFSA ● Reality Workshop ● Job Search ● Resumes and Cover Letters ● Mock Interviews In addition, Wisconsin Students Go 2 College Senior Application Day. This is a day where we bring local reps. (tech schools, UW System, private colleges) to River Valley and they help all seniors apply to the college of their choice. This is actually a DPI initiative we carry out to ensure all first-generation college students get support to apply to college, but we offer the experience to all students. On this day, we also host the Department of Workforce Development, financial aid reps., university reps. to help with essay- writing and the head of the apprenticeship program at Madison College. For this reason, the River Valley School District provides
students with the opportunity to participate in Youth Apprenticeships, School to Work, and Dual Credit options in these fields. Students are provided with information and guidance to make informed decisions regarding their educational and career paths whether their career goals are leading to an in-demand career area or an unique, narrow occupational area. Through the utilization of Career Cruising, career exploration events, self assessment, and dual credit course-work, the River Valley School District prepares students for life beyond high school in a variety of ways. Students, staff, and community members are able to explore the job outlook for specific careers of interest by utilizing the following websites: http://worknet.wisconsin.gov/worknet/ Iowa County Sauk County Richland County Communication with parents regarding Academic and Career Planning The River Valley School District Counseling staff meets with students in 8th, 9th, and 11th grade and their parents. The School Counseling and ACP websites are another form of communication with parents and the community regarding ACP and Counseling programming. Students are exposed and aware of career exploration at the elementary level in life skills class taught by counselor Stacy Hauden. In addition, our classroom teachers discuss careers and education during lessons throughout the year Sixth graders fill out an ACP journal in guidance class and continue working on career exploration in 7th grade Business Skills class. During 8th grade, every student meets with the middle school counselor to discuss their ACP. In addition, 8th grade students meet with our counselor to discuss: ● School skills and how they relate to workforce skills ● Holland Code inventory and the 16 Career Clusters ● Online Research and Exploration into Career interests and educational paths ● High school registration and course catalog-making connections to life goals At the High School level, we offer a Post-High School Options Night for students and parents. This event is offered to middle and high school students. . Representatives from many different post-high school options (four-year universities, two-year colleges, and apprenticeships are on hand to answer questions and provide information to parents and students. Engaging community stakeholders in Academic and Career Planning The River Valley School District partners with many of our local businesses across our District. Current partnerships include: ● “Like A Hawk” campaign, stressing the importance of achievement, behavior, and growth of students at school and off-campus ● Youth Apprenticeship and Work Study Employers. ○ Schmidt Dairy Farm ○ Franklin Farmers Mutual Insurance ○ Cheese Maker #1 ● River Valley Administration sitting on Chamber of Commerce Board in Village of Spring Green ● Eighth grade Career Day where students visit a college campus and/or local businesses ● Eighth grade job shadows are required for careers class with many being completed in the River Valley community ● Annual field trip to Cardinal AG for students interested in the fields of engineering, electronics, chemistry, and physics ● Local attorney assists with Mock Trial competition team ● Exploring figurative language, poetry, drama, and other areas of English Language Arts in partnership with American Players Theater ● Development of a District Goal to increase community connections Students with disabilities participation in the ACP process and the transition planning process ACP is for all students in the River Valley School District. All students participate in student and counselor transition meetings in grades 8, 9, and 11 and the ACP portfolio. Individual students (grades 11-12) may enroll in employability skills class beginning in the 2017-2018 school year. ■ Horticulture Science ■ Personal Finance Academic and Career Planning Portfolios - Linking School Experiences to Career Goals Students at River Valley High School will develop an Academic and Career Planning Portfolio as one tool to show evidence of their readiness for postsecondary education and/or employment. Where am I going? How do I get there? It is a proactive process of developing workplace values, skills, personal qualities, and knowledge of one’s chosen career. By the senior year, students will have had ample opportunity to develop the portfolio before they showcase it. The Academic and Career Planning Portfolio offers benefits for students, parents, teachers, and employers. Creating the portfolio helps students make the connection between educational experiences and career goals. Students will analyze their personal accomplishments or lack of in relation to their readiness for employment.
For parents, the portfolio becomes a visual tool to see the progress/direction their son/daughter is making in preparation for the world of work. Parents share in the responsibility of helping their children prepare for gainful employment. They need to stress to their children that there is a correlation between attitude toward work, academic achievement, workplace skills, co-curricular involvement, and being a self- sufficient contributing member of a community. For teachers, the portfolio becomes a vehicle to articulate between school and career. The teacher’s role is to serve as a facilitator as he/she works closely with students in the development process. For employers, the portfolio is a showcase of student’s best works and what they have accomplished related to their chosen career. It will allow employers to assess how prepared a student may be to enter the workforce or postsecondary institution. As a partner in the educational process, it behooves employers and college admissions representatives to become as knowledgeable as they can about prospective employees. A student’s Career Portfolio will assist in selecting applicants for a position or college admission. Connecting students with staff as they participate in Academic and Career Planning Middle School Homeroom Students at River Valley Middle School participate in quarterly activities in their homerooms. Students are in groups of approximately 15 students from their same grade level. This group will work with a River Valley teacher as their advisor. During these activities, students will develop skills to ensure success in middle school, develop an Academic Career Portfolio, and make a connection with other students, the staff, and the school, creating a positive environment to learn and grow. High School Blackhawk Period Students at River Valley High School participate in quarterly activities in their homerooms. Students are in groups of approximately 15 students from their same grade level. This group will work with a River Valley teacher as their advisor. During these activities, students will develop skills to ensure success in high school, continue working on their Academic Career Portfolio, and make a connection with other students, the staff, and the school, creating a positive environment to learn and grow.
