St Paul’s Catholic School Thursday 29th August, 2019 Vision: At St Paul’s we know, love and serve God. Mission: To provide a collaborative, holistic learning environment founded on Catholic ideals. A gentle reminder of our school’s values: S elf-less Whaiaro-iti T rustworthy Whakapono P roud to be Catholic Ngakaunui Ki a Katorikia A dventurous Rikarika U nderstanding Mohiotanga L oving Aroha S triving for Excellence E Tohe mo te Hiranga Kia Ora Koutou, Another busy week at St Paul’s Catholic School. We had a great day for our annual school cross country races yesterday; a fantastic effort was shown by all, ka mau te wehi! Thank you to Mrs Ashton for your wonderful organisation and to all the teachers and parents who helped make the day a success. If you have not done so already, please book in for a time to take part in Student-Led Conferences (A celebration of Learning!) next Tuesday afternoon. The conferences begin at 1.00 pm and finish at 6.00 pm. A reminder that school finishes at 12.00 noon on this day. Please note, that there can be up to four Student-Led Conferences happening at any one time in each classroom. The purpose being: Years 1-3 Take part in or lead discussions with my classmates, my teacher and my parents about my learning. Years 4-8 Talk about what I have learnt in this piece of work, why I needed to learn it, how well I’m achieving and what my next learning steps are. Following is the type of questions parents can ask their children about their learning on the day. There will be copies of these questions, or questions that are similar to these in classrooms during the conferences to use as prompts: a. What are you learning? b. Why are you learning this? c. How will you know when you have learnt it? d. What are you most pleased with? e. What was the trickiest part? Also, your child may talk about their learning celebrations and talk to you about the ‘Learning Pit’! There are places in this world where it is easy to feel the presence of God, and where prayer comes easily and there are times and occasions when it is easy to see God at work in the lives of others; and as we look back to see God at work in our own lives. There are also times when we might wonder where God is? We can discover God in the presence of other people, in nature, in so many different places and so many ways throughout our lives. A question we might ask: Where have I seen God recently? Sometimes, we first need to open our eyes, and we will discover that God is in this place, and we did not even know it. Ma te Atua koutou e Manaaki, God Bless you all. Shaun Emms
Shaun and I were at a Principal and DRS conference last week. The conference was discussing the new Religious Education curriculum which is set to come in 2021. The curriculum will be stream lined from Year one to Year thirteen, so there is no primary and secondary Religious Education programs as they are too separate and should be a continuation of learning. We listened to an amazing speaker called “David Wells”. He had created a special powerpoint that was aimed at leaders in Religious Education. David was able to explain and upskill us DRS’s and principals in the writings from our Pope and previous Popes. The Catholic Church faces many criticisms in the media but he articulated that we need to hold on to our faith and the principles of Jesus Christ. Bishop Steve spoke to us about some challenges— how we proceed with children who are becoming “transgender” etc. Something that struck me, was that if we live like Jesus Christ, then we don’t sit in judgement, but we think of these young people in the image and likeness of God. The entire two days was inspiring and uplifting and, at time challenging. All the speakers we listened to were informative and inspired me to come back to St Paul’s with the latest information and thinking which is fantastic.
