Shandon United Methodist Church Week of Sunday, May 2, 2021 Meet Us In an editorial in The Christian Science Monitor, Mark Sappenfield talks about what he calls “horse sense.” He refers to a book called Shy Boy: the Horse that Came in from the Wild, written by Monty Roberts. Sappenfield writes, Author Monty Roberts has spent his life trying to convince anyone who will listen that the old way of training horses -- coercion and fear -- is cruel and ineffective. His book shows how he taught a wild horse to take a saddle and rider in a few days solely by understanding its view of the world and working with it…. Roberts's most difficult horse, which had suffered catastrophic trauma from previous handlers, nearly killed him. But he never had a thought of giving up, though it took him 80 days to "gentle" the horse…. Only by not resorting to violence can you develop a relationship built on trust and respect. Then a horse becomes a “willing partner instead of your unwilling subject.” Sappenfield thinks we can learn a lot about human interactions from Roberts’s horse-breaking methods. Sadly, we try to “train” or “break” each other with the old-school methods of coercion and fear. He sees Gandhi and King as pointing out a better way to the “blessed community” – patient listening and non-violent engagement. The better way is the way Roberts breaks horses – “by understanding its view of the world and working with it.” In our polarized world, where coercion and fear seem to reign supreme in the media and in the streets, the church has the opportunity to offer a different model. We can show the world how people who disagree can still listen to each other. SUNDAY WORSHIP We can show how unity and diversity can coexist. MAY 2, 2021 MAY 2, 2021 We can love each other in spite of our 8:45 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. 11:05 a.m. LifeLine Service Rev. Smoke Kanipe Rev. Shannon Bullion differences. This is our biblical mandate.
