MONSIGNOR J.J. O’BRIEN SCHOOL 99 Bridlewood Road S.W., Calgary, AB T2Y 4J5 Phone: (403) 500-2104 Mr. T. Desautels, Principal Ms. A. Lyver, Vice Principal Ms. K. Sunderland, Assistant Principal www.cssd.ab.ca/msgrobrien JANUARY 2020 Welcome back to our students, staff, and families. Our hope is that everyone is ready to welcome in the New Year with renewed enthusiasm and a love of learning. From our youngest students in kindergarten, to our students in junior high, we look forward to celebrating new learning in 2020. Enjoy the return to Monsignor J.J. O’Brien School for the second half of the school year. What a fantastic place to teach and to learn! Before our school closed for the Christmas break it was certainly a hub of activity in December. We celebrated 2 Advent concerts with our elementary students, a Band concert with our junior high students, a craft night with our kindergarten students, and a multitude of classroom activities. As a whole school, we also had the opportunity to come together as a community with Fr. Jerome from St. Patrick’s Parish and celebrate the beginning of Advent through the Liturgy of the Word. There is absolutely something special about being in a Catholic K – 9 school leading up to Christmas. For the families that attended Christmas mass at the church, Fr. Jerome left a message with us in his homily that sums up what Christmas is: “It is not the greatness of the gift that matters, but rather the love of how it is given”. As our focus now turns to the 2nd half of the school year, we are excited about the future. Our district construction department completed more flooring upgrades over the break, and we were also able to benefit from some pre-approved funding to add to our classroom technology in the form of student chrome books & laptops. We would also like to welcome our new Chief Superintendent for the Calgary Catholic School District, Dr. Bryan Szumlas. Dr. Szumlas will be replacing Mr. Gary Strother, who has announced his retirement effective February 29th, 2020. Dr. Brian Szumlas was previously a director with the school district and has deep roots with Calgary Catholic. On behalf of the Monsignor J.J. O’Brien school community, welcome Dr. Szumlas! Closer to home I would like to welcome back Mrs. Debbie Behrman (a former retired teacher at MJJOB) who will be replacing Mrs. Mary Cowan (grade 6) who is now on maternity leave. Welcome back Mrs. Behrman. Happy New Year Everyone! Tod Desautels Amanda Lyver Karen Sunderland Principal Vice Principal Assistant Principal

Tamara Gordon Counsellor MONSIGNOR J.J. O'BRIEN SCHOOL As we enter the cold and flu season, we want to ensure that our community stays healthy and happy over the holiday season and into the New Year. Here are some tips and tricks to reduce the risks of potential outbreaks: 1. This is a great time of year to review healthy handwashing habits. 2. Visit your local pharmacy or CHC for your annual influenza immunization. 3. Remind friends/family/students about “Respiratory Etiquette” and cover your mouth when you sneeze and cough. This reduces the risk of the spread of droplets/airborne illnesses and reduces the risk for colds and flus. 4. Exercise does the body good! The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommends 60 minutes daily moderate exercise a day. Staying active can help you feel your best during this illness season. 5. The holidays can be a stressful time, so make sure that you are getting enough sleep to meet the demands of your daily activities.
